When applying for disability...

Should age and matter?? I was once told that i didn't deserve to get disability because i was too young and had not worked enough. That person want on to tell me that she deserved it because she had paid her dues(she was middle aged, and spent most of her disability on drugs). That was a few years ago. Then recently my aunt said that its harder for younger people to get it because they haven't worked enough. Ok, if a person is to the point they can't work, can't hold a job, for what ever health reasons, should age be factored in?? And if age should be a factor, why are children getting disability??

People that apply for disability, whatever the age is, need to have a complete history of medical problems to back them up before they are even considered for it.
I don't think age should matter, I think what should be the focus is if the person is really disabled && not able to work.
I believe they turn down a lot of young people because they assume they can work over an elder person. Maybe?
Disabled people can still work though, some can anyway... I guess it all depends on the case. How is the person disabled? I'm sure they look at that.
As for children, well children always come first, then the elderly, then young adults. That's how most cases are. The most serious will of course go first.

My question is if you have two people presenting the same problems, the only difference is age, why would one be chosen over the other?? I have a friend who gets disability for a mental illness, i have the same mental illness only more severe, and i was denied. He had been getting disability for it since he as a teenager. Thankfully, i finally found a job a can physically and mentally handle, but what if i couldn't?? I would be sol. And i still have take a few days off now and then to cope with my mental health.

That is a good question... a lot of people don't believe a mental illness is a big deal, but it's in illness && people don't get that.
I have a family friend that has a form of mental illness. He has schizophrenia. He does work, he actually works 2 jobs && at times has to be out of work. He has his moments. I believe he was on disability for a while. He isn't at this time, I think its because he found work.
So it's hard to say. I know some with a mental illness can't ever work && are still fighting the system.
As for you, maybe because you do have a job or have you tried even before your job?
I think the system is a little off myself.... If I was you, keep fighting it... something good might come of it.

I tried before i found my job, and had given up on it. I was prepared to take what ever work i could get for as long as i could, because i needed the money. At that time the longest i had held a job was just a few months. Now i am proud to say that my mental illness is under control and i have held the same job for two years. Of course my job is kind of cheating because i work at my parents house taking care of my younger brother who has downs and autism. There has been a few times that my depression was so bad i broke down at work, and if my parents weren't there to talk me through it, i would of probably taken off and hide some where for a few days. The reason i started this discussion is because a friend of mine, who is basically the same age as me, has been trying to get disability for awhile and getting no where. Her health problems are so bad that there are days she hurts so bad she can't move to get out of bed.

My son is 6 years old and he get's disability benefits for his autism and he hasn't worked a single day in his life!..LOL
Years ago I knew this 18 year old guy that never worked a day in his life because he was depressed and he got disability for depression.. You just need a doctor to back up your claim and if they still reject your disability claim you then get a lawyer and they should be able to help you get your disability.
So to answer you question, no it doesn't matter.

Don't give up, even if you have to wait a long time , because once your approved you will get months or perhaps years of back pay that they owe you . It's worth it.

A friend of mine did get a lawyer and is waiting on a court day, and has been waiting for months. I got a lawyer when i was trying, and got no where. So i gave up. I was lucky though, because a job came available for me to work as a PA for my brother who is handicapped(downs and autism). I am able to work in my parents home with him, and if my depression kicks up while at work, i have my family there to support me and the company i work for knows of my disease and will allow me to take time off as needed.
