Hi Chel-I have been to Bankok twice. We stayed at Amari Hotel which I was glad because it is where the their flea market is located. My husband was on a meeting so I was by myself during the day for 4 days on each trip. I learned to go around the hotel vicinity which is where the flea markets are. I learned to eat by myself around and across the hotel. Chatuchak week end market is definitely a must-go. If you can, have a side trip to Phuket. My advice-haggle for prices...you must haggle, except for the largest jewelry store of course.prices there are fixed. I got my elephant skin bag and wallet there.
Candied goods such as tamarind and guava preserves are available nearby, I think it is across four seasons hotel.
Also...dont forget this-wacoal underwear are made in Thailand and Indonesia. You must buy wacoals.they are very cheap there.
If facing Amari, there is a small mall at the left side with stairs. ask around where wacoal is available. There are also in big malls but its cheaper in that place. Its easier to find wacoal in Indonesia though.
Have a great time there. If ever I can think of some more tips...I'd post them

Bangkok is a great city to visit and you will find lots to do.
There are tons of places to stay depending on your budget, The famous Khao San road has most of the budget places for backpackers but in recent years is also catering for more mid range family friendly places also. Really I would recommend you take a look at a map and pick hotels with good access to the sky train. I have stayed before at Novotel on Siam Square, very close to all the shopping and eating, 2 minutes to the sky train only downside is not so much nightlife in this area but ideal for families.
You are spoilt with places to go also. Definatly take a boat along the Chao Phraya river for some great sights and stop at a few places along the way e.g. Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Grand Palace. The markets are worth a visit, Chatuchak Market on (as mentioned earlier)open weekends, is a huge place for bargain hunting and eating.
I love the food, go and sit down and experience streetside place instead of just staying in tourist restaurants. If you are not sure what something is just try it, food is quite inexpensive.
Have a good trip.
