Color Coding

why is it that blue color is meant for boys and pink color is meant for girls..in our place we have a university where students wear blue and pink for girls...and also in our society pink are for girls and blue are for boys..why is it? and when does it started??

From what i have read back in the forties pink was actually for boys and blue for girls. I guess it is like any other trend and changes from time to time.
