Is drinking water from a water softener at your home healthy ?

We have just purchased a home with a salt water softener. The water is all foamy and cloudy when it come out of the faucet and there is no bypass. All the water in the house run through it. There are 4 of us and 3 pets. Is it healthy/safe to drink softened water or should we get a water cooler for drinking and cooking ?
