What works better in a fight -- Kicks or punches?

I know fights are wrong and what not, but when it comes down to it... in your opinion, what do you think works better and benefit you more -- Kicking or punching? Do many people use kicks? I read something about Steven Segal where he said the reason you don't see him kick often in films is because its not realistic.
