We have always had a few rules for stocking stuffers. The main one is that if it costs more than $5 it's a gift, and shouldn't go in the stocking. My kids 16 &19 fill mine and my husband's stockings and they think a new rule should be "the weirder the better", I also try to make sure along with the fun things, there should be a few useful items too. My mom got a huge kick out of it a few years ago when I put 10 1 pound packages in their oversize stocking. And we usually play at lest one practical joke on someone each year. It has become a tradition to put scratch off lottery tickets and powerball tickets in too. So what do you do?

we dont do stockings with our kids (i have a advent calendar that i use with them and it has 24 pockets so each day throughout the month of december, our daughters get something - some days its a note, some days its a treat).
BUT i do make a stocking for my parents. i buy notepads, i found some designer kleenexs! my dad collects button, (the saying kind) so i look for them all year round, stuff that pertains to their interests mostly.

We actually moved our Christmas to New Year's now that our kids are older, started due to money issues but they actually like it better this way and asked to make it permanent, so the stockings are our Christmas morning thing. My dad collects toy tractors mainly so I watch for them for him.
