As an employer I have had to address this situation on a couple of occassions. Basically I just pulled the person aside from the group, normally in my private office and I just tell them that their BO is offensive to other co-workers and that they should address the problem. I have even had to do this for women sometimes that wear a lot of very strong perfume. In my case its not personal but in a group setting its a must to make sure that everyone is comfortable on some level.

Just be polite, gentle, and direct. Don't try to dance around the subject. Pull him aside in a manner that doesn't get anyone's attention, and very quietly discuss the fact that his hygiene issues are affecting the class. It's embarrassing but if you're mature and gentle about it he should get the message just fine. Often people are used to smelling funny and just don't realize other people are offended by the odor.
