What's the best kind of dog for kids to own? |
| |
| We'll be getting our side yard fenced soon, so that would give us the chance to have a small or medium sized dog. What type of dog would be appropriate for a family with a young child? Something friendly and not aggressive that doesn't mind being petted or picked up. Perhaps an indoor/outdoor dog that could come and go as she pleased. Hopefully, we could find a smaller dog that would be happy with a VERY small yard space for play. The side yard is maybe thirty feet across by twenty feet long. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! | | | | | |

| | I'm sure we wouldn't be getting a puppy. I would prefer one already trained, if possible as I don't know anything about dog training or house breaking a dog. | | | |

| | I'd say a medium sized dog...maybe a beagle or a pug. Tiny dogs like Chihuahua's may end up getting hurt if kids play to rough and large dogs may not know their own strength with children. ~~IN SEARCH OF PEACE WITHIN~~ **AGAINST THE STORMS, I WILL STAND STRONG** | | | | | | |

| | I would be careful about getting a small dog. A lot of them are hyper and always into something. They are also easier for little kids to hurt. At our house, we have three dogs. They all do really well with our toddler, but we had two of them before he was even born, so they've known him since birth. The other one was only 17 months when we got her, and she was used to being around a baby even smaller than my son. Out of our three, the newest one is actually probably best with Elliott. She's a lab/spaniel mix. She weighs about 45-50 lbs. She's wonderful. She never snaps at him and she tries to protect him. | | | | | | |

| | That sounds about the right size of dog for us. When I was a kid, we had a mix breed German Shepherd about that size. He was phenomenal! I think he measured less than two feet, from the ground to top of his head. He wasn't a tiny dog, but smaller than medium. Not violent. Very protective. He defied all stereotypes. I was so proud of him! I miss that little guy! Wish I could find another dog like him. | | | |

| | I think a medium dog that little children cannot pick up because they may drop a little dog and hurt it. You have to remember if you get a little dog if the kids accidentally step on it they may hurt it badly. You can have any size of dog you want and take it for walks so you can use up its energy. | | | | | | |

| | I know this is an old discussion I had saved it to answer later but I didn't expect it to be this late!! Any way, I think a good dog to have for kids is a staggy. We have 2 & our daughter will be 2 in a couple of weeks & she can do anything to them & they don't care - they are a great dog. | | | | | | |
