How did you QUIT smoking???  email this discussion to a friend?

I Quit about a year ago! I had smoked for about 14 yrs., through both of my first two pregnancies, and then I got pregnant last November and decided that I wanted to quit. I wanted to go get "hypnotised " to quit but didn't want to pay the $300.00-$500.00 it cost, so I got on ebay and ordered a "self-hypnosis" cd (about $5.00 WITH s+h!!) I listened to it for about a week and haven't smoked since!!! I tried and I could not physically MAKE my body inhale!!! How did you all do it??

i never started and neer will. my grandfather did hypnosis to quit cigarettes too and it worked for him as well

That is so cool!! I know that it is in your head, if you don't beleive that it will work for you then it won't! All hypnosis is, is getting your mind and body into a relaxed state and putting a suggestion there. I find it very interesting!!

When I became pregnant I quit cold turkey. I haven't smoke since.

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

Gradually cut back. Drink Lots of water, and sleep off the withdrawl..

I asked apologised to the Tobacco spirits for abusing it's sacred use. Tobacco was believed to be a sacred herb of my Native American Ancestors was used for healing purposes, and offering to Spirit.. and thank you to spirits... .. I asked the tobacco spirit to forgive me for abusing it, and to guide me into stopping my abuse of tobacco. Now only time I ever smoke is during my prayer ceremonies... and only tobacco use I use is for spiritual offerings. So I quite it, and now it is not used enough for any addictions..... It has been over a year since I had my last smoke in prayer with it, and it has been since 94 since I quit smoking as a teen in abusing the uses of it.

That is great, I had never heard of the self-sypnosis CDs before.
I quit over a year ago by using Nicorette. As long as I had Nicorette, I didn't crave cigarettes, so it really helped me. I'm pregnant now with my first baby so I'm glad I quit before I got pregnant than trying to do it now that I am pregnant. I don't know if I would have been able to do it.

I think the most important thing, no matter how you quit, is that you're really ready to quit and you want to quit. Otherwise whatever you try won't work.

hmm, i've tried a lot and..well, when i quit things i just force myself to find them disgusting, you know?
but right now i know trying to quit smoking might send me over the edge.
i only smoke about two a day so...that's really a lot of help to my lungs but, someday i know i'll quit for good and i think it'll coincide with a pregnancy but who knows.
