Honesty is the best policy- Does the proverb still hold good

i am always honest, some say too honest for my own good! my mother always brought me up never to lie she always told me "no matter what you've done, its always worse to lie about it and you'll always get found out and always be in more trouble". over the years when i was younger, and tried to lie she was always proved right and i havent told a lie in years i dont believe in lying at all. some of the time this has got be in some sticky patches but not as bad as they would have been had i lied, and i now instill the same sayings my mum said to me on my daughter.
