Geocaching: Searching for Treasures email this discussion to a friend?

I have really taken to this hobby sport. Geocaching involves using a handheld GPS receiver to find hidden treasures, usually in the woods. The website, Geocaching.org explains it all. That is the main international website where people post where they have hidden the cache, along with the coordinates. Usually, the cache is in tupperware or a water-proof container. Inside is a log that you sign, and a small trinket. You can take a trinket but you have to leave one, too.

This has been a great way to explore parts of our community and state that I would not have normally gone to. I have found spots around the Twin Cities that you just would not expect. There is a spot near home that is almost like being in the mountains. You walk a trail, looking down into a valley. It also gives the added benefit of exercise. Once you make the find, you log it on the website and add any info you want. I have about 115 finds so far. This is an international game, with more caches being added everyday.

Young kids really like it because of the prizes. Try it out sometime!

My friend does geocashing too. It seems pretty awesome. He was telling me that people pass the items and some of the items make it all around the entire world and get signed from each place. He really likes it, and I think I'm gonna try to do it too sometime. Thanks for share your experiences with it.

Those called travel bugs. Usually it is an item with a registered number on a tag. The last one I did was a wooden duck that had a goal to be in the north in the summer and the south in the winter. I moved it up to northern Minnesota. Someone else can take it south. You can track its progress on line with the number.

There are also geocoins, which a user can get custom made with any design. They have a number, too. Some have a goal, some do not. I just moved a Route 66 themed coin down to Rochester, Minnesota. Had I been going anywhere near Route 66, I would have tried to drop it off a cache near there. Thanks for the reply!

I have a coworker who does this and she really seems to enjoy doing it, I would like to try it sometime. I might check into the website this week and see what it is like. I would not mind the little trinkets as my daughter would love them. However, I don't have a handheld GPS, but I have one in the car that would get me close to the item I am sure.
