Using an external hard drive  email this discussion to a friend?

radairc (47) 4 years ago

I recently bought an external hard drive for my laptop, since I only have a 30g hard drive installed. My question is, how do you go about using programs from the external hard drive? Mine keeps telling me that it doesn't have the proper setup to support the installed programs when I try to run them. Do I need to install an OS on it? I want to run my MS Office from it, as well as my Sims 2 game. Any suggestions? I have a WD 320g external drive.

when mal and me had the external drive on his pos 3gig computer.. the programs ran off it same as if they were on the main drive, it was just a seperate drive like having C, D, or even E drives. maybe ya set it up as being a totally seperate system? >.< i dunno.. i just always plugged it in back and forth tween our systems and itd jack up the same as if id plugged in a digi cam to retrieve stuff or an mp3 player to load.

what I would do is store your data on the external hard drive, and use your main computer hard drive for the installed programs it would be easier.

Thank you for your response. The only problem with that is that my hard drive is full from just the basic programs. Someone told me I should clone my hard drive and just replace my existing one with the external (take it out of the case and install it into the laptop). I'm hesitant to do that, as I am sure I'll mess something up in the process LOL.

Hey,

Well when you install a program, it should ask you the location you want to install it. Instead of it being Drive C:, change it to where ever the harddrive is located.
