Dogs for entertainment or for security?  email this discussion to a friend?

What do you consider in owning a dog, is it for company and entertainment or for your family's security?

When I and my wife visited a pet shop, we argued on what type of dog we need to buy. I my self want a dog for security purposes and it should be big, alert and strong, my wife wants the small one with a lot of furs that she can hug and play with . Since our money was just enough to buy one, so we went home with nothing but an arguement. Though we did not have a fight for a small things like that, I felt guilty of not giving attention for her likes. So I decided to just buy the small dog the next day, which I did, and my wife was very happy she hugged and kissed me the way she never did before...LOL....

So how do you choose your pet, is women realy picks the small pet for them?

of all animals, i really love a dog as a pet especially those furry and cuddly ones. happy we have a dog here in our house but it is of different breeds (cross-breed). i prefer shitzu and chowchow but we can't still afford to have one since it costs kind of expensive. our existing dog right now serves as a security since we don't take her out of her cage. she is like a doorbell here to our house since we don't have one. lol she barks everytime there is someone she doesn't recognize even those who are just passing by. happy

I like your existing dog, it's the kind of dog I wanted to have in my house. That kind of dog can and will alarm us if there's someone outside that we need to check out. I like a doberman pinscher, a well active and alert type of breed, that will as well protect you from burglars and other type of dangerous persons. Thanks...LOl.. and Take Care..

When choosing your dog it is important to know what your expectations are. Although small dogs can be cute and made for many hugs, they can also make very good watch dogs as well. I know mine is. In my opinion, to have a dog for security, we have a choice. Either guard dog or watch dog. In order to have a well behaved guard dog, this will take diligent and careful training, unlike that of training dog that are chosen for companions, re:Entertainment apposed to security.
I enjoy my small dog for companionship. In the meantime, I also got myself a very keen watch dog. Although she is small, weighing in at only 5lbs, she does like to think that she can protect me. Overall, I think it comes down to personal circumstance. There was a point in our lives where we needed a dog for personal security reasons, therefore we chose a big, strong and smart dog. I believe that when most people go to choose a dog as a family pet, they are not thinking of the domestic animal as a source of security, be it personal or for the house, yard, shop etc. Depending on the breed of small dog that you have decided to purchase, do not under estimate it's ability to work for you. It may not be able to take down a 180lb person but it may be able to alert you to possible prowlers.
All dogs are very smart. They can tell you who are good people and who are those that may be questionable too.

I agree to that EvrWonder! I only wanted a big dog, to keep those unscrupulous individuals out of my household and in my family as well, since I work late at night. Although the dog I bought was small, well he always barks and everytime I went home and just in our house gate, I can hear his bark and my wife wakes up faster than before, to get the door for me. Thanks, LOL...and Take Care

My parents had a dauschund mix for a while when we were growing up. That little weenie dog sized ankle biter was mean to anyone she didn't like. She'd chase the garbage men down the street if we left her out when they came by to get our trash on trash day. They were more scared of our 10 lb mixed dog than of my brother's big german shephard!

The best kind of dog to have is a mutt. They definitely make friendlier pets! They can also be very protective of their families, making them excellent watchdogs!

You should try to find a dog from the for sale section of newspapers or from bulletin boards near your home. Pet stores generally get their dogs from "farms" that do nothing but breed dogs and they are not always the healthiest of places!

If you want a pedigree dog, you can always find private breeders. The conditions under which they raise their pups is much safer and healthier and the puppies are loved and given lots of attention before they find their new homes. These dog 'farms' usually have so many puppies that they don't give them attention or the love that every animal needs.

I've had all sizes of dog. I have to say that my very best dog was an English Setter/Border Collie mix. I got him free from a breeder who raised English Setters but somehow the neighbor's Border Collie managed to sneak in at the wrong time so his English Setter had a litter of 12 cross-bred puppies! The one I chose was affectionate, very intelligent, a great watchdog and a great companion.

I guess I'm like your wife. My English Setter/Border Collie mix sometimes thought he was a lap dog, but it was very difficult holding a 60 pound dog on your lap! LOL

Right now, I have two tiny Maltese dogs. I love them to death! I've always wanted a tiny lap dog that I could pamper and hold. These make ideal dogs for me!
Even though they weigh only 5 pounds and 7 pounds, they're great watchdogs because they bark and alert me whenever anyone comes near the house. I doubt they could bring down an intruder, but at least I know when there is someone near.

When we were buying the first one, we were asked why we wanted this dog. My husband said, "Because it's the one she wants." LOL Yeah, he bought it for me.

Like you...mentalward, I have owned dogs of every size, breed & mixed breed! And my favourite type of dog, is always the one that I own currently!

Currently own a Westie (15, lost his brother a yr. ago @15) and a Jack Russell Terrier (how is the bigger original breed) And BOTH of them think they are "Dobies or Shepherds".....just in smaller fur coats. (That should read;who is the bigger original Breed).

If you hear these little "monsters" on the other side of the door...you would be fearful of what you would find on the other side. Their bark sounds...HUGE!

Yet, in spirit, they are the kindest, sweetest, lovingest friends I have!

They also have NO fear, when they smell fear coming off me!

The JRT I got as a rescue dog....and he seems so "thankful" that he has a "forever home,"......and in future I will always go to Rescue Centers, these poor doggies are so needful! (I know my 15 yr. old will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge, soon.)

I have found, no matter the improprieties/challenges (baggage) these Rescue Dogs bring with them....LOVE seems to conquer all! Cheers!

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6159)   ranked 41 out of 7,864 in dogs  4 years ago

You are right, pergammano! Choosing a dog from a shelter IS the best way to go! I've gotten quite a few dogs (and a few cats, too) from shelters.

You can get all sizes, shapes and forms from shelters. I got one dog who was so very timid, he really trusted no one for almost a year! Then, he suddenly just stuck himself to me and didn't want to let go! I felt so bad thinking about what he must have gone through before I got him!

You can choose the EXACT dog for you because there are so many to choose from. I almost got a Cocker Spaniel from the S.P.C.A., but someone had just beaten me to it just minutes earlier. I ended up bringing home a spaniel/terrior mix and he was just as good as any pedigree out there!

I got a rottie once through Rottie Rescue. This dog weighed 150 pounds! When he wanted to sit on your lap, you just had to grin and bear it! LOL It was funny, too. In trying to decide on a name for him, I already owned a puppy that I had just gotten from a shelter about a month before and had named him "Bear". When I looked at the rottie, I said, "Bear would be perfect for you but this little guy already has that name" but, when I said "Bear" the rottie perked his ears up and cocked his head. I asked "Is that your name... Bear?" He stook up and got really excited! So I ended up changing the pup's name and letting the rottie have the name Bear since I was sure that's what someone had named him previously.

When he walked down the stairs of our deck, he looked EXACTLY like the hind end of a bear! This dog made the eyes of everyone who saw him just pop right out! LOL He was such a gentle giant!

Wow! Your stories of your different kinds of dogs really impresses me, how I wish to have those kinds of dogs. I'm an animal lover, and dogs are my favorite, it's just you ca'nt asked them from the owner or the breeder, needless to say they're for sale and the amount was too high for a simple worker such as me. They said that owning a high breed dogs needs a lot of attention during their younger ages. Vaccines and vitamins are needed to get the best result of an adult high breed dogs, also good quality milk and their foods which cost much should as well be considered. If I'm in your place, and have those kinds of dogs, maybe all my hard earned money will be spent just for their supplies. Most of the owners of high breed dogs here in our country are those that are rich, imagine a puppy costs more than half of my total salary and some are 4 times higher. So I just stick to one dog this time, anyway the dog I bought was cute, funny and alert. It's what my wife wants, and what she wants will be mine as well. LOL...Thanks for your great contribution, and continue to loved your pets as you loved your selves...take Care my friends....LOL

myLot reputation of 99/100. pergammano (3563)   ranked 159 out of 7,864 in dogs  4 years ago

I feel, my dear girl, that your advice is the best of all the postings! And you seem to have such a good handle on canine companionship! Like you, I find all my good friends, in fur coats, are so loyal, and undemanding! I see no difference in lge versus small dogs. My little dogs need as much outdoor activity as the large ones, I have owned in the past! I am lucky that I have 3 acres, so they have total freedom!

I am amiss, at where our dear friend, omar, is under the impression that dogs are so expensive. Possibly it is so when you get into Designer Dogs...because genetics have been played with! Also, we are all aware that many Purebred Dogs come from Puppymills, where their health has been compromised from breeding (inbreeding)!

I know that there are many wonderful people out there, like you, mentalward, who'se heart has been stolen by dogs who have lived a checkered past, and I guess we gleen our happiness watching our "friends" get over the hurdles, that their past has challenged them with! All it takes is love, and patience, and we end up with the best friends in the world.

I had a German Shepherd, who was a rescue doggie, and when I brought her home, she decided she was Mother to just ONE of my chickens, and to my son's Rabbit! She would not let the Rabbit or Chicken off the perameters of the property, and would bring them home, from wherever they were, at nite, to their respective homes!

We learn so much from watching our animals! Cheers!

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6159)   ranked 41 out of 7,864 in dogs  4 years ago

Pergammano, I loved the story of your German Shepherd! That's so sweet that she "adopted" a chicken and rabbit!

I had such fun with my rottie. He loved to play with the puppy, who weighed about 10 pounds at the time. The pup would tug on the rottie's ear, then the rottie would bat the pup across the room... gently, so gently, but enough to tell the pup, okay, that's enough. Then, the rottie would go up to the pup and 'nudge' him with his nose and put his front end down, you know, with his rear up in the air, saying, okay, come on, let's play more! A 10 pound pup and a 150 pound rottie! What a pair!

I have 3 acres here, too, and it's comical to watch my little Maltese gals romping around out there. They FLY around the property! It's almost like they're 'gulping' in their next steps... little white blurs zooming all over the place. They sleep GOOD after a romp outside!

Yeah, I love dogs, too. They're my absolute favorite animals, and I've had quite a few different kinds. They're so loving, affectionate and ALWAYS happy to see you! They never condemn, never judge. All they ask for is your love and affection and give plenty in return!

myLot reputation of 97/100. omar0913 (329)   ranked 722 out of 7,864 in dogs  4 years ago

You both made my eyes wet, I'm beggining to envy both of you.....Pergs, here in the philippines pure breed dogs were truely expensive, and their maintenance as well...HUHUHUHUHUHU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6159)   ranked 41 out of 7,864 in dogs  4 years ago

Omar, except for their price, pedigrees and mutts are no different as far as their maintenance or cost goes unless you plan to show or breed your pedigrees. Then, extra care must go into the dogs. But, if your pet is just a pet, you don't have to spend more money on grooming, food, training or anything else for a pedigree than you would a cross-breed or mutt.

All pets need care and good food, vaccinations, routine visits to the vet to make sure they're healthy, just as we would do for our own children. But, I can certainly understand about the price! Pedigrees are MUCH more expensive to buy, unless you get them from a shelter or from someone who just wants to find a good home for their puppies.

I think you made an excellent choice because small dogs really do have less health problems in general. Large dogs usually develop arthritis and hip dysplasia much earlier than a small dog would. Maybe it's because small dogs generally get more exercise simply by being more active than larger dogs.

Enjoy your new family addition!

Very smart choice. Small dogs are easier to handle and they live longer.
Big dogs need a lots of attentions and running to stay healthy.
Security is always under question. Small dogs are barking very loud, so they can alert you for possible danger.
I have two small dogs and I am very happy with.

omar, I agree totally with polachicago. My rotti requires as much love and affection as my 3 min-pins do. My rotwieller is 160 pounds and the min-pins weight 9, 10, and 15 pounds. They all want and require love, attention, and room to roam. They all need exercise and plenty of love and attention.

I personnaly like big dogs because their tough. I like big tough animals, I guess you could say I'd like a dog to protect me. I used to have a chihuahua, obviously not big, becasuse she found me and loved me so I felt obligated to care for her. I would take in all stray animals if I could regardless of size though.

I think you made the best choice move you could have possibly made, so congratulations. Later you can buy your big dog and it can eat the little one, (just kidding) but you have made your wife happy by actually demonstrating your sensitivity to her. Besides, a dog being small doesn't mean it won't protect and defend its territory and at least give you a warning. Congratulations, enjoy the little critter and wife!
