Could I be homesick?

It will be three years in December since the family moved from Los Angeles to Sacramento. We left the friends and most of the family behind in a quest for a better quality of living, among other things. But dang I miss being able to pick up and go to the beach or Disneyland or whatever. I miss my big backyard. I miss the people I worked with. It's nice here but I think I'm homesick.

I'm not sure how anyone could get homesick for L.A. but I see that you are
I live 65 miles away from there and I rarely ever go and when I do it is out of necessity. Sacramento never looked too appealing a city either. Maybe I just don't like big cities

I wasn't actually right in LA, I was in the SF Valley, in West Hills. We had coyotes and other wildlife and didn't have to go into the city unless we wanted to. But if we wanted to, there were all the places down there that we could go. And I miss the weather too. The winters here (which are not that cold really) are too cold for me!

I'm up here in Lancaster, and the winters here are cold too. But, the weather in the daytime is almost always nice
Now, if I could just figure out how to get the bad element here to move back to L.A., my city would be better as well LOL
Isn't there anything fun up north? Maybe over in 'Frisco, that would be closer to drive to than L.A. for you

I moved house, three years ago after living in my old house for fifteen years. I moved like you, for a better life. We moved to the country, to get away from the City.
I think it was the biggest mistake I have ever made. I miss the City, the shops and my family that still live there. I can not admit it but to my husband as he still travels to the city to work.
Yes! You are homesick, just like me.

Sounds like you are home sick. I remember when I moved to Baltimore MD from a very small country town in PA. It was culture shock on top of my home sickness. I got over it by making new friends and finding new places to go.
It was never "home" but I was happier being there with people to be around. I moved back to my hometown after 6 years there and now I find myself missing the life I had in the city. But home is a better place for me to raise a family.

I had been here in Cebu for 15 years away from my parents and friends. But since I found my own family here and also my regular job as a public servant, I feel at home already. The first few years really made me sick that I wanted to be back home for my mother and brothers and sisters. But big amount of money will be needed to fly back home so I looked for some things to make myself busy. And now, as my mother passed away for two years now, my father, sisters and brothers and I just keep connected through cell phones and internet.

It gets easier as you make connections. Still I don't feel like Sacramento is 'home' yet, it's still LA.

Oh, I feel for you Dawn! We moved to our area about 7 years ago and during that time I met my very best friend. 3 years ago she moved to another state and then became very ill with aggressive cancer. Now I was in a small town away from my family and my best friend was in danger of dying. I ended up having to take medication for depression. I'm much better now. My friend is in remission and living only 2 hours away, but I still get homesick for my part of the state. My husband's father is starting to show signs of dementia. It sure would be nice to be closer to them. I really do love it here, but sometimes I really just want to go back home.
Have you visited Los Angeles to see family lately? Sometimes a visit can help you a bit. I always feel refreshed and happy to return to my own home.
Are you active in any kind of social group? I know that you said you are not religious but I wonder if there might be some sort of social group associated with an area church that might help you find a little bit of "family" right there in Sacramento. All anyone really needs is one or two good girlfriends to unburden to once in awhile.
Hang in there, kiddo!

We were down in LA for a short visit in August and we've had some visitors up here too. A social group, huh? I wouldn't have the slightest idea where to go look honestly. My sister is up here and it's nice to be near her but she is also really busy. My dad has moved closer too, but that's still 3 1/2 hours away. Anyway I really do need to get offa my butt and go do something because it isn't going to come and find me!

Do you like to read? Libraries have book clubs. Sometimes you can even find one through a coffee house. How about scrapbooking? gardening? walking? These all will often have groups to join. Just some thoughts. You could also make a weekly ritual of calling a relative back home. Maybe chat with someone different each week. Like I said before, I really feel for you, friend!

What about going back to Los Angeles for a short break? Is it possible to pay a short visit to your friends there?

I'm planning a weekend in December. And who knows? Maybe the company will get me down there for a Christmas party.
