Would You Make A Difference, If You Had The Chance?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 78/100. FaerieAne2003 (429) 4 years ago

First, I would like to issue an apology to my friends here for my lengthy absence during the past several weeks. I can't tell you how much I missed you all! So now I'll tell you why I haven't been here.

I've gone back to school! I'm very excited about it, and I've been there for nearly 4 weeks now.

I love it! I learn something new every day, and it's so cool! Last time, my favorite class was Swedish (Swedish massage is what you usually get from a spa, between mud wraps and steam baths) and my least favorite was Anatomy and Physiology. Now, A&P is my favorite, and I HATE Swedish class. My classmates are nice enough. Some are better than others. There are 22 of us, and it's like a kindergarten class; you know, where you stay with the same 20-something people all day, and different teachers come to your classroom, and there are cubbyholes on one wall. And no kidding about the cubbies, either! (No, we don't sit at long lunch tables, we go our separate ways; and I don't even have to raise my hand and ask to go to the restroom!)

I can't believe how much more organized I've become, too! I have a big Stanley Fat-Max 4-in-1 rolling toolbox where I keep my books, sheets, table cover, etc., and I take it with me every day. I have a kindergarten-style pencil-box in there too, and I keep my notecards, my highlighters, paperclips, general office-supply junk in there to keep it from getting lost in the big part. And I get teased about it. Some of the women I've made friends with, and they think my organization is fantastic, and are trying to emulate it. But others (especially the people who are just there for something to do) make fun of me for it. Nothing directly to my face, but I catch titters and whispers of my name and possessions, then get a big sarcastic smile when I look over. I enjoy friendly debating in class, when it's permitted and warranted, asking questions on the subject at hand, just participating in what I'm learning. But I get whispers and titters about that, too. People, if you are in an adult-learning facility, remember that you are ALL adults, and other people get their feelings hurt the same way you do. At any rate, I've made straight A's on every single quiz and assignment so far, and they haven't (they complain loudly), so there--HA!

Whether I'm teased good-naturedly or made fun of mercilessly behind my back, I still enjoy school, and I'm very blessed to be where I am in my life right now. I have a great family, a supportive husband, and I'm going back to school to learn how to correctly do what I've always wanted to do.

I've made a difference in my own life, and my future career will make a difference in the lives of countless others who will PAY MONEY for someone to simply TOUCH them in a caring manner without judging them! People with HIV/AIDS or elderly folks for instance, or someone who just doesn't get touched often. How many times a day do you hug your kids, or ruffle their hair as you walk past? Someone is willing to PAY for that kind of caring acceptance.

So my questions are these:
If you had the chance, would you take it? If you could go back to school, would you? If so, what would you study? If you were given the opportunity to help someone just by simply being your human self and showing compassion, would you do it? Do you do it already, in tiny ways, just to make SOMEONE ELSE'S day a bit easier?
