Dog Friendly Cafe Anyone?  email this discussion to a friend?

For all of the dog owners, or prospective dog owners out there...

If there was a dog friendly cafe/coffee shop near your house, or downtown in your city would you frequent it?

Now I know there are many "dog friendly" cafe's out there that'll let you bring your pooch to diner...(out on the patio!!). But I'm talking about a REAL dog friendly place. A place to relax INSIDE with your pet pal & sip a cup of coffee or herbal tea while your doggy drinks a complimentary bowl of ice water & woofs down a specialty home baked doggy pastry.

What if this place also offered you somewhere to wash your dog, or have him washed for you by a staff member for a small, or monthly fee?
What if this place also offered a doggy daycare & also offered dog training?
What if it also offered eco-friendly, all natural pet supplies such as shampoos, flea collars, doggy fragrance mists etc?...
And what if it had a nifty little doggy gift shop loaded down with one of a kind handmade dog collars, leashes, blankets, bowls, toys etc...?

Doesn't that sound like the purrrrrfect petopia?

I personally think it would be really cool to have a place around like that for dog lovers to mingle & let their furbabies socialize with other doggies!!

Out of curiosity I've been searching around online to see if there is any place like this that exists but have yet to find anything. I wonder why. Surely health codes aren't that strict EVERYWHERE!?!?!

To be honest, I rarely take my dogs where other dogs are at. My dogs will never set foot in a dog park, or anywhere else where people freely allow their dogs to be. I don't even like to take them to the vet, and only do so in an emergency or to get a rabies shot. Thankfully I can do the rabies shot every 3 years now, and I do the distemper shot myself.

I may sound like a paranoid freak, but a few years ago I took one of my dogs in to be neutered, and he contracted the canine flu. All of my dogs became ill, and one of my dogs died 5 days (and 3 vet visits) after showing symptoms of this. It took the rest of my dogs several weeks to get better, and hundreds of dollars in vet bills. Canine flu is aireborn, so is kennel cough. Other things can be contracted from walking through where other dogs have defacated... not worth the risk to me.

Wow, ok yeah that does sound very paranoid. Sorry but it does.
I read over some of your posts & understand that you've had alot of messed up things happen to your dogs but...wow. It reminds me of one of those insane, over protective, new mothers who never takes her newborn out of the house, doesn't let anyone hold them unless they wash there hands first, if you're sick you can't come into the house, never lets them play outside when they get older, never let's them get dirty or scrapped up...basically they never let them live.

I'm one of the biggest animal lovers that I know. Cats, dogs, pure breeds & mixes, bunnies, lizards, pigs, snakes, rats, skunks, you name, I love it!! But I'm not going to shelter my animals & baby them simply because they might get hurt. If you have kids are you also going to end up as one of those insane mothers who never let's her baby crawl on the ground or eat dirt, never let's them play in the rain, who freaks out over a simple scrap?

Now I may come off as a b*tch for having posted that but I honestly don't care. I do think that's insane for you to shelter your dogs so much. But they are your dogs. I can't tell you, nor would I, what to do. You're an adult & can make your own choices. I'm just simply stating my thoughts in response.

All I can say is I'm glad there's not more people like you who never let their furbaby's out for a romp on the leash or who never take them to a dog park...The world would be a dull place if everyone felt that way.

If I knew for a fact that everyone vaccinated their dogs properly, it wouldn't be as much of an issue. Parvo is deadly and can live in the grass for years- you can track it on your shoes and bring it into your home. Do I have a bottle of bleach at my front door to spray my feet before I come into the house? No, my dogs are vaccinated against it, but others may not be, and things are always mutating so the vaccine may not be 100% effective.

As I stated, kennel cough and the dog flu are aireborn- yet I do allow my dogs to go outside, however I'm not going to take my dogs to a place where other dogs are allowed to go in without having proof of their vaccinations. To do so is risking your dogs life. I had a 5 year old dog die just days after showing symptoms- I am not going to risk that happening again. I've worked with dogs for 13 years, and we require that dogs are current on all vaccinations before coming in- and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who are clueless on getting vaccines (or even routine care) for their dogs. We literally had a woman stop in for grooming and was turned down for not having vaccines on her dog, and her dog sneezed in the lobby and one of his teeth fell out... his teeth were THAT rotten. Now I know that rotten teeth are not contagious, but I wonder what else that dog could have been carrying? We wouldn't allow him in our facility, but I bet he'd be welcome in your cafe huh?
