My daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD..  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm relieved now that it's official. She goes to the Dr. on November 6th and will hopefully be assigned some meds for it to help her calm down a bit and focus more. She gets SO distracted sometimes that it takes forever for her to get her homework done some nights. Some days she's so fidgety she's practically bouncing off the walls. A simple trip to the bathroom will take her on average 30 minutes because she gets distracted and forgets she has other stuff to do. Keeping her on track and focused on what she's supposed to be doing has been a full-time job lately.

Anybody have any tricks or tips I can use in case they don't give her any meds or until they start working if they do?

I'm glad you have some answers. As her parent I'm sure you are getting advice galore. Some people might be saying she's too young for meds, or doctors just want to drug children instead of making them pay attention, but no one is in your situation. I haven't seen anyone's responses yet, but I mentioned the above because I've seen parents of ADHD children post on here, and sometimes people are a little mean about the decisions the posters have made. But she isn't their child. So I pray that you and she will find relief in her finally being diagnosed, and being able to move on to living with it, instead of being puzzled at her behavior with no answers in sight. thumbup

I can tell you patience. She is in her own little world. Try to make a game out of everything and make a bonus point chart. It sounds juvenile, but their little minds go 90 miles a minute. Put timers in the house all over. She has 3 minutes or whatever in the potty. She has to beat the clock during homework hour. She has 1 hour to watch tv. She will then learn to beat the clock and get rewards for it and then be able to handle it on her own. This is the best advise and keep this up even after counceling or meds or both. This shows her the limits of the activity. It's hard to get their attention but if you talk sweetly to her and show her the timer--it's a Godsend!! Trust me! Best of luck to you!

Hi! i'm glad that you have got a diagnosis, now that the problem is known you can start to work with the doctors to try and manage or solve it, so it's definitely a positive thing! I don't really have any tips for you, i've never been in your situation but i know that the nhsdirect website has some really good information pages that can be really helpful, so it might be worth checking them out! xxx
