Well, that's their strategy, I guess, to attract listeners. Every station claims that they are number one. I don't really who's number one.
I don't listen to FM stations because I'm not an AM or FM radio listener. I am dependent on net sites and TV with regards to news, while music sites on the net for the music that I like.

hi!
you are right every radio stations claim that they are number 1. not just in radio but also in TV
it doesnt matter, as long as they are doing their jobs to make their listeners enjoy their musics.

sure. i live near a very big city and they have a lot of rock stations in my area and some of them give prizes away at certain times during the year, whether it be a trip or whatever and they ask what their favourite station is (but they never say it is the best in the nation.)

well, i don't even care which is number one.^_^ so i won't even bother about such surveys.
BUT in some purposes, not for popularity or anything related, "surveys" are quite reliable tool for studies. although, it's only a reflection of a small percentage of your target population, it represents, atleast, the majority PROVIDED THAT you describe in details your target population such as age bracket, sexuality, location and etc.
so if ever a survey states that for this certain population this or that station is number one, you can submit to believe as such. the problem is, these stations on-air won't tell their survey's population and would only speak in general as part of like what the other user said, marketing strategy.^_^
for me, which is number one is irrelevant anyway, people would still listen to which station would play their favorite music, or to which station they feel most at home with. thus, NU 107 still rocks.

Yes, not only with FM stations but also with AM stations! Each station claims they are the number one. I don't know which is telling the truth. Well, this is their way of promoting themselves. It's one way of telling the viewers to stick to the number one station but how can listeners believe when all of them are claiming to hold the number one title? That is very impossible!

I guess every radio stations does that, they ask their caller 'what is your favourite radio station' and the callers always answer that they are the number one. I don't think that this is a good way as a survey because most times it is the same group of people who is calling the station and got asked the question all over again. So it is not like getting the views of every listeners but only the callers.
