Recording things

When recording a t.v. show or movie do you let the Vcr or dvd player run for a few more minutes before stopping it? I know that when I or my family used to record things it was habit for us to give it just a few more minutes before pressing the stop button so that if there was anything we might have missed, hopefully it will have been recorded. Sometimes news bulletins or weather bulletins come on, tests for a t.v. network, or the t.v. network goes off air, so when that happens we are prepared. I know that most of the time the network does not stop where it left off unless it was a planned interruption, and therefore we lose five minutes or more of the show.
So what is your mannerisms when recording stuff? Do you wait five minute, ten minutes more? Or do you stop it right on the hour or half hour that it's supposed to go off of?

We don't record on the VCR anymore, now we record on the DVR.

We just recently got one... well two of these ourselves. Pretty cool thing, I really like it myself, no chance of not recording it and somehow messing it up!

I know that every dvd or vcr seems to be different with settings and such, and some are simpler then others. I haven't recorded anything in a while. When I did it was always ahead of the actually show so I set a time and date as well as the speed for the tape.
My fiance and I recorded something earlier, well attempted to but it didn't record.
I appreciate the response.
