Why isn't there a Bob Hope today?

Bless his heart he was the best with his shows to the troops and giving humor to the troops over seas and all that - USO and his own tours. He did them for years nad years and really entertained the soliders that were protecting us... sadly he has passed on.... he was one of the last of the "good ones" in Hollywood.
So....
Why isn't any celebrity taking over where Bob Hope left off? I hear Wayne Newton does from time to time, but I never see the shows - they aren't broadcast on TV - seldom hear about them. I don't hear of any celebrity entertaining the troops but I do see them going to other countries and supporting the people there... why can't they support their own? Why can't the USO make a come back?

you are right. we definately need that. he was a wonderful man. i also heard of the women that did that. one even lost her life right after the tour there in a crash Carol Lombard. people said a lot about her crass ways of talking and cursing but not much about how good she was with things like that. I guess her hubby Clark gable was also serving his country at the time

Don't know much about those two, but they were in the day when the celebrities did show their support to the troops. I have recently recorded some back tours of Bob's... some special on TV.... and the number of celebs that accompanied him and the joy it gave to the troops.... sure is a shame a current celbs can't be bothered to do something like that.

I think it is because Today's stars either are too busy to take off or they don't know about the USO or they don't care.Bob Hope was unique. Regardless of your view of whatever war, you could like him.These days, if you go to Iraq to just entertain the troops you are labeled a person who is pro war. That isn't the case or the reason to go. It is to bring some joy to the troops.Will the USO comeback, I don't know. It seems that the USO had its heyday when the war that was being fought had a clear reason.And most was on board. will there be a war like that ever again? I doubt it.

You are so right. IF they go now, it is for the publicity - and usually to put the war down. And they don't care. Yes, it was never about the war with Bob - it was about the troops and america.
