Fatty fish like salmon are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA both essential for brain growth and function. In fact recent search has also shown that people who get more of these fatty acids in their diet have sharper minds and do better at mental skills test. While tuna is also a source of omega 3s, its not a rich source like salmon. Tuna is definitely a good source of lean protein, but because its so lean its not very high in omega 3s like canned salmon is. Also albacore white tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna so EPA advises eating no more than 6 ounces of albacore tuna weekly. The benefits of eating salmon, such as prevention of sudden cardiac death, have been well documented, new research indicates that some of the toxic pollutants found in both farm raise and wild salmon counteract the beneficial effects of the omega 3 fatty acids presents in the fish and may increase the risk of diseases. Omega 3 fatty acids are present in all salmon, but at substantially higher concentration in farmed than in wild salmon.
