For the past 12 hours I have heard several terms used - projections, phonecalls, polls, senate, house etc etc. Is all the counting over? I'm just curious as to when the process ends / has ended and when Obama is officially the winner. Also when does he take over as the president! Sorry for these basic queries - but thats just me!

Obama has officially won as of this morning (my time, at least). He gave his acceptance speech already and everything. He will move into office on January 20th. ;)

The counting is over, and Barack Obama has won, save some mess the republicans may bring up in order to gain a recount. Even that isn't likely, because Barack ran away with the Electoral College, so a recount is really unnecessary. But Obama will officially take the office in January, so we actually have another two months of this mess with Bush, and then change can begin!!!

No it's not over until December when the elector voting is done. And it could still go the other way if some of them decide to vote against the state votes. It has happened and could happen again. Candidates can fail to get the most votes in the nationwide popular vote in a presidential election and still win that election. This occurred in 1876, 1888 and 2000.

I hope you're not holding your breath for some groundbreaking change, Kowgirl. What you are talking about I believe is the Electoral College. A candidate needs 270 votes at the least to win the election. Obama spanked McCain's booty in that category. He got 349 electoral votes all together. Way more than necessary. Sorry but I don't know when the campaign was called, but I heard the news last night after 11pm est (At the time he only had 333 electoral votes), and again this morning.
