wtf! My dad is whimpy

Two years ago my dad had an hernia operation at the age of 80. After the operation he was having a hard time controlling his bowels. Then when he got out of the hospital I noticed he all of a sudden has a habit of humming and some whimpering that goes with it. Do you think this has caused some imbalance in him, or has he little control of his abdominal muscles that controls his bowels and everything. He sort of hums and whimpers in between breaths as if he's trying to control his bowel from just dropping off. I know this should be on the medical discussion but to me this is a true wtf revelation at home. What do you think guys?
