Ten years ago, if you'd have asked me what I wanted to do with my life, I would have answered "Play Professional Golf". Well, it's been 8 years since I last picked up my clubs, because now I pick up a hoof, a saddle, chaps. I changed my entire life because of this specific four legged creature, changed where I live, what I do, how I live, who I am. I went from Golfer to Cowgirl, suburban living to rural living, Southern California to Rural Arizona, and I could not be any happier. Has your horse changed your life like this?

No, but I was always a horse crazy girl. I rode from 5th grade thru college and a bit beyond. I never owned a horse, I still live in the 5th largest city in Texas. And, honestly, if given the choice of staying where I am with my cats or moving to the country and having a horse, it would be a very hard choice. I hate to move.

I really hate to move.

I hate it so much that if I never move again, it'll be too soon.

I last moved in 1984.

Iknow what you mean about moving! We just moved to Arizona from Southern CA, had to get out of there, it was just getting to crazy. Now that we are here, this is it, I don't ever want to move again.

so, what kind of horse do you have? Is that a chestnut? My monitor is so bad its hard for me to tell!

He is "red" - I think considered "Roan"? Not sure. I'd have to look at his papers. To me, he is copper, like a shiny new penny when he's all cleaned up. He's a tennessee walker, so when he moves, he gaits, very smooth, so we can go for miles without all that bouncing around. It's so much fun!

Yes, I know what you mean. I grew up in a rural area and always wanted a horse as a kid. As an adult, I never felt the urge for one even though we have the room. Just seemed like more work with three kids already. Two months ago we had a starved paint show up in our back field. The police couldn't take him so we agreed to care for him. Of course, no one has claimed him and after thirty days he became ours if we wanted.
I can't imagine not having him and will always believe he came to us for a reason. He's become another one of my babies and I don't mind tracking out at 6 am in the pouring rain to feed him before work.
His health has improved with proper care and he seems so happy. We can't even begin training or the possibilty of riding him for awhile. He was so skinny, his backbone is still sticking up a little. Yet, I don't care. I'll be perfectly happy with him even if we neve get to ride him.

You must be a saint in human form. So good of you to take in that poor boy. How awful of someone to just let him go like that!
I do hope that one day you are able to ride him, there is nothing like being up on a horse, clears the mind, you know?
If anything, he'll keep the weeds down, keep snakes away and keep the brush down in case you're in a fire prone area (like what's happening in CA right now!)

I am so jealous of you! I have loved horses since I was teenie tiny, and they have always, always been my favorite animal. My parents put me in riding lessons when we moved to Texas right before my 7th grade year, and I not only rode but also volunteered at the stable. I did mostly grunt work like mucking stalls, but I loved it anyway because I got to be around the horses. Unfortunately, I had to stop riding when I started college, and I miss it every day. :( It is one of my big ambitions to own a horse someday. I am glad that you enjoy and appreciate your horse, and I hope you two have a lot of great memories together. :)

It's so good that you volunteered like that. When my daughter started riding, there were so many kids that were just dropped off at the stable, parents not understanding all the work that was involved, and a lot of these kids needed adult help to tack their lesson horses. I ended up helping lots of them, and was so rewarded by it all. Lots of work and now, lots of friends!
I hope one day you are able to get back to riding. It's really good for the soul.

hi,
I know what you mean having a horse turns your life around. I started of with 3 horses 2 mares and a 3 year old stallion.Sadly one of the mares and a stallion became very ill ad had to be put down, but he left us a memory of him by getting the surviving mare pregnante before he died. His foal was born the following year on April the 8 th the day he died, the mare was a month late! the foal was just like his dad but with his mothers colours !But 2 years after he was born i had to sell them both as i had to move to a smaller house.I wil never forget the wonderfull moments spent with my 4 horses, the unconditional love that they gave me was wonderful and i will never forget them. They are forever in my heart,i will never consider buying a horse again unless i am sure to stay in the same place and always have enough room for him or her.So what about your horse ? what sort of breed is he ? My mare and her foal were appalosas, the stallion a mix of spanish breeds and the decessed mare was a spanish breed.I'd be interested to know your horses name .Happy riding!
Jess

Hello! We have 3 horses, 2 are Tennesssee Walkers, the other a POA that my daughter rides. Mine is named Romeo, and he definitely is! He is so loving and affectionate, I just can't imagine life with out him. They have such a way of making us just BE different people. We changed our live completely around, leaving the suburbs of Southern California to live out here in rural Arizona. It's a lot of work, but worth every trickle of sweat and those 5am wake ups! I actually look forward to cleaning stalls; I must be crazy!

i never had a horse of my own.... but the horses i used to ride and train have taught me a lot..... they have actually taught me the meaning of life and how to live it..... unfortunately both of them (scarlet and scotch) are no longer in this world and i must say that they were the closest to my heart and always will be...i have always been a horse lover since the time i learnt to walk..... and will always be a horse lover even after i go 6 feet under..... but as you put it.... these four legged creatures have taguht me a lot in my life and i intend to learn more from them as life goes by..... :)
