I just responded a post about ukay-ukay from a fellow mylotter here. And it gave me this idea. We can not deny that a lot of us Filipinos are fond of ukay2x which comes from different countries like USA, HK, Japan and many others. I just have one question in mind. Do you think our USED clothes if exported to other countries will also be bought and liked by foreigners?

i don't think so. i've been to several ukay-ukay outlets in baguio city when a few years back but i never saw any foreigners inside any of the shops. i really think they wouldn't dare try to enter one.

Oh how unfortunate we are in that area. While a lot of people in our country go for used clothes so that they can save a lot of money, our very own used clothes are put to trash and nobody dares to get it and sell.lol. We'll, I'd rather give it to the least of our brothers and sisters instead.

I don't think so... How it can be exported? I think ukay-ukay is not a legal business i mean, ukay-ukay stores do not pay tax, because it is approved by the government and store owners are against into it. Have you ever think where does those clothes came from(clothes in ukay ukay)? I mean, does clothes in ukay ukay are not smuggled clothes? How does it passed to customs?

You have a point there mhagskier. I don't know how it pass the customs but yes it's everywhere in the country. My point is what if our used clothes are the ones to be exported in other country, would they buy it also? I mean if all is in the legal way.

I dont think used clothing is a great market to get involved in especially for export. Many of the items the Philippines receives each year are discarded in foreign countries. We have recycling in the UK that specifically takes clothing for charities etc. I also bring clothes here to give away (can read on my blog article at http://www.tropicalpenpals.com/charity.html . The other thing is that most of the goods in the West are mass produced in bulk which actually makes them cheaper than the goods you are trying to sell (besides the fact that the other goods are brand new). I have also traded in second hand clothing in the UK with Jeans which I did make a profit on but you can buy them in Tons or by the truck very cheap. Even as a single item its less than P100 each. I think you could be wasting time trying to find a way to use the goods unless you can talk a charity organisation to purchase them from you as it saves shipping.

Oh Im not really sure. I think they'd just go to a thrift shop or Goodwill or something like that. I think that is their equivalent of ukay-ukay. Then again I dont really know since we are both on the same end of the issue. Now if its on eBay or some online merchant site, there's a good probability that they will like and buy it. Maybe other myLot members who are in those other countries you've mentioned can truthfully answer that.
