My son's father and I come from VERY different backgrounds; I'm Native American/Pagan and he was raised as a Jehovah's Witness - I know, you can't get any different, right (lol). Anyway, we had a tough time figuring out exactly how to celebrate those holidays/occasions that we had agreed to celebrate together. One was birthdays (which are my fav and I was totally not willing to give them up), Halloween, and Yule.
Our first Christmas as a family was Five years ago and I had NO idea what to do with it. We wanted to start a tradition of our own since my son's Father didn't really agree with the way my Mom celebrated; we had to find a way to do it for US.
So after stressing over this for what felt like EVER! I came up with something. We would have a tree - a real tree - and we would make the wreaths for it our selves, there's one tradition. We would also go through our things and find one GOOD item each to donate to a shelter or someplace like that and on Christmas eve we would celebrate the birthing of the new sun by making a special wreath or star to go on the tree. Those would be OUR family traditions.
We have done each of those things every year since, we've changed them a little but it's still fundamentally the same.
So, I want to know what special family traditions you guys have made up on your own. In what ways are your traditions or rituals special, how are they uniquely yours - for anything, not just holidays?
