Have you ever suffered with a sprain in your leg? |
|
Yesterday when my friend was getting downstairs from her bedroom, she had slipped from the second last step..Before she could realise it, everything happened in a fraction of second. She got a sprain in her leg.She was told by doctors that she has an injury in the ligaments which join two bones in her legs. She has been asked to be in complete rest for a week, which is really impossible for her. Have you ever suffered with a sprain in your leg? How did you manage it?

1. gerald_lian (1053) | 1 year ago | Hi there, smilyn! Yes, I have suffered sprains on my leg countless times in my life! It is a horrible experience, with all the pain, swelling and inflammation to deal with. As a Pharmacy student, I have learnt in my lectures the proper way to manage and deal with incidents of sprains. The protocol to follow is called the RICER protocol.
R - Rest and relax the sprained area and avoid further exposure of damage to it (eg. do not continue to play sports/walk after the injury, thinking that you can handle the pain).
I - Ice pack can be applied to the area to reduce the inflammation and swelling every few minutes or so.
C - Compression to the injured area should be done using a cloth or bandage to reduce blood flow to the area and reduce inflammation. Remember to loosen the compression every 15 to 20 minutes, for a couple of minutes or so, to avoid lack of oxygen to the injured area. Continue compression for a duration of 2 hours.
E - Elevate the injured area of the leg to again reduce blood flow to the area and reduce inflammation.
R - Refer to a doctor or specialist (which you friend has already done).
I hope the protocol would be helpful for your friend. If your friend is still in pain, she can take paracetamol (Panadol or Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Nurofen) to ease the pain. Paracetamol is more recommended, as it is associated with lesser drug interactions and relatively safer than ibuprofen. All the best!

2. savypat (7813) | 1 year ago | Can she get the use of a walker or crutches? She really needs to stay off it so that it can heal, if not she may find herself in much worse pain. Good Luck

smilyn (1049) | 1 year ago | I too have advised the same thing to her. I feel that if she starts to move now before her leg is heeled well, then she may have a big trouble somewhere in the future..And thanks for the ideas of walker and crutches..I will suggest them to her.

smilyn (1049) | 1 year ago | That is very bad..Getting hurt during pregnancy is very painful..That too when the legs are hurt, it would be very painful and tiresome to stand or work. With the incraesed weight during pregnancy, legs play a major role.Good that your baby was safe..
