I am an African American woman with long hair. I know people do tend to their hair differently from others but I want to know how do you care for your...do you get relaxers and how often do you wash your hair?

I myself get relaxers to straighten my hair out just a little and I wash my hair once a week or every two weeks.

Thats something I had never even given a second thought. I am as white as they come with the straightest hair you can imagine. I can wash my hair and dry it with a towel and just leave it, I don't even need to comb or brush it.

I worked with an African-American woman and she told me of the trouble and hassle that comes with her type of hair. I was told that once it is styled, it can't get wet and that she doesn't wash her hair but once a week or so. It then takes her hours to get it to conform to whatever style she wants, and this after using many hair products.

I can't give you any advise as to help you with your hair, I just wanted to say how much I feel for those that have the problems that you do. Its entirely possible that you spend the same amount of time on your hair in a day that I spend in a month or two.

Sorry for you. I wish there was some way to help, but I can't.

Well actually my hair is not hard to maintain like you co-worker. See my grandmother was an Indian and I have hair like she did. which canbecome wavy so thats why I put a relaxer in it to straighten a little. Your co-worker is right about getting hairstyles that once you can not get it wet or itis ruin. The only thing I do when I wash my hair is put some oil on it, blow dry it, and flat iron it. I do not go to the salon to get it done because I can't afford it right now. But my daughter is a different story, her hair is almost to her butt and it is thicker than mine so it may take me a good 3 hours to do her hair, so I do go through what your co-worker do when I do my daughter hair.

I'm black also (guess you know that from the picture). I care for my hair pretty much as you described. I relax my hair about once a month or month and a half. I wash at least once a week; occassionally every two weeks when I'm very busy or feeling lazy or under the weather. Sometimes I air dry my hair but I like to blow dry it because it gives my hair so much body. I use light oil on my hair. I almost never use any sprays, spritz, gels or setting lotions. I typically brush my hair with a spiked brush, not a brissle style brush. I try to eat right and take supplements to keep it healthy and strong.

What kind of supplements do you take? I use a light oil on my hair also. I also give myself an hot oil treatment when I wash my hair which really help with the dryness.
