Do you think CC sabathia is worth $140 million  email this discussion to a friend?

All the talk has been about CC Sabathia going to the yankees's for $140 million next year. This would be a higher salary than the one Johan Santana got from the mets. The big argument is that no pitcher should be paid that amount of money. When they talk about Sabathia, they say his weight is an issue. They also say to invest that much money into any pitcher is not a good move because you never know how long his arm is going to hold up. And you also have to take into consideration the way the Milwaukee Brewers used the hell out of him to get into the post season. Pitching him on 3 days rest several times. So what do you guys think? Especially the Yankees fans out there. Would you invest that much money into a pitcher? Is it worth it in the long run? what happens when your team is starting to rebuild and you wanna get rid of salaries? Now you are stuck with high priced players that you can't get rid of because of the amount of money they make.

No one is worth that kind of money.

Its a gamble that the Yanks are willing to take as they clearly are one of the teams that spend huge amounts of money to put the most expensive payroll on the field. They are contenders every year and make the money back by selling merchandise and filling their stadium for games.

So in all honesty, it isn't the Yamkees that are spending the money on an overpriced hurler, its the fans in New York that end up picking up the bill.

I am a Twins fan and watch players develop there and eventually turn to free agency and leave for riches with a large market team. This happens all the time with the teams from smaller markets.

Funny thing is that the Twins are contenders every year too. They have one of the best farm systems in the majors and they end up grooming young talent just to see them bolt for the big money of large market teams.
The Twins were one hit away from the playoffs this season even without Torri Hunter and Johann Santanna. They both left for huge contracts with the Angels and Mets respectively.
Minnesota has some stars and they make several million dollars a year too. They have a payroll of just over 62 million dollars or an average of 2.4 million per player.
The Yankees team salary is just over 209 million or 6.7 million per player.
The Yanks were eliminated from playoff contention two weeks before the Twins.

Its possible to field a team without spending that kind of money, its just hard to keep the team intact when large market teams pay unGodly amounts to secure players.

The trouble with all sports franchises is that the players are way overpaid and its the fans that end up paying the bill by higher ticket prices, parking and concessions that are inflated, and merchandise that is overpriced.

It isn't the owners that stand to lose money, its the fans that come out on the short end.

Like I said NO ONE is worth that kind of money.

Very good points, I must say. If only the Twins didn't choke during the 3-game Series with the Royals at season's end, then they would've made the playoffs, too.

$209 million for one team. Hm. Didn't the Tampa Bay Rays get to the World Series with only 20% of this payroll? Then again, those guys would be reaching arbitration soon, which would balloon their salaries.

You bring up some very good points. I never thought of it as the fans that come to the games are the ones who suffer from the high ticket prices and merchandise due to the high salaries of the players. The yankees fans can blame the team on the A-rod trade for that one. I live in Ny, and I went to a yankees game over the summer to see them play my Red Sox, and the price for a hot dog and a beer makes you have to run to the atm machine. It's funny the yankees get all these high priced guys every year and keep loosing. The ticket sales go up, and then the fans get pissed cause their team sucks. They all cheered when A-rod came, and now half of the fans I hear want him gone. He makes too much money and I don't think any other team in their right mind would take on his salary.
The other thing that sucks like you said is the players coming up in the small market towns like Minnesota and leaving for the more big market ball clubs and for money. I don't blame players for going after the money, but I wish athletes would sign a contract with the team that they have a desire to play for. All of these guys are making money that they cannot spend in a lifetime. So what's the differnce between $20 million and $100 million? It's still millions. These guys go for the money, and then they end up on a team that can't bring in other free agents to upgrade the team as the years go on because of the team has all of their money tied into one guy. Then they start complaining saying they want to play for a contender. Then you get these teams that have to pull off a 6 team 40 player trade just to get these high priced players.lol..It's ridiculus

No. As good as CC Sabathia is, I don't think he's worth $140 million. I didn't believe that Barry Zito was worth his $126 million [for 7 years], and from the looks of it, I'm right.

Even if Sabathia doesn't wound up as a bust as Zito did and plays a bit more like Johan Santana [winning record, adored by fans and what-not], it still isn't worth the money they'd be spending on him. I feel that they might be better off with Lowe and Burnett, two pitchers and it would cost them much lower than that.

Now I know that since the Yankees are in a big market, they could afford to continue making money despite the exorbitant contracts they hand out to players, what with all the sellouts and merchandising they do, but it wouldn't really a great investment.

One last thing is that CC Sabathia seems to be the Alex Rodriguez of pitchers. Great during the regular season, but struggles in the playoffs. This has been the trend for two consecutive playoff seasons [07 with the Indians and 08 with the Brewers].

Good point about the rays making it with a very low payroll before. You would expect a team that has been coming in last place for over a decade, and getting all the top draft picks as a result to finaly make it to the post season. Luckily for them they still have alot of the young guys that have been their under contract for a few years. But I like everyone else is waiting to see how long this team is going to stay together now that they are one of the elite teams in the american league. The more better this team gets, the greedier the players will get. I think that's when players ego's get in the way in sports. every guy feels like if it weren't for him the team wouldn't have made it to the post season. So therefore he feels like he should be rewarded with a huge contract. When these teams give out these contracts, the next guy who's contract is up is going to be looking for the same amount of money or even more.
As far as Sabathia goes,he got lit up by my Red Sox last year in the playoffs, and the Brewers used the hell out of him going in to the post season pitching him on 3 days rest, and they did it again in the playoffs. The Giants Paid Barry Zito all that money and he was a bust . But maybe you can blame it on the lack of offense that he has around him. I didn't pay attention to who was even on the Giants roster this year. Maybe Zito had some games he could have won if his offenense would have picked him up. The yankees have all the money in the world to sign Sabathia. alot of people think he is just playing around trying other teams to drive up his asking price. The guy is financially set for the rest of his life. It should come down to what team he really wants to play for, and not what team wants to pay him the most money.

Thats too much he's a great regular season pitcher. He chokes come post season. The Yankees are probably willing to pay more because pitching is the weak part of their team. Salaries just keep going up every year. When will it stop?

I think $140 is too much for any pitcher. How long is his arm going to last? As far as player salaries go, I don't believe they will go down. The problem is that you have every guy trying to get paid the same amount as the next guy. Look at the money the Mets gave Yohan Santana last year. Sabathia is going to be trying to get that same amount or even more because he feels like he's just as good as santana. What ever money Sabathia gets, the next big free agent pitcher is going to be demanding the same type of deal that he gets.

The question should be if CC Sabathia is worth $160 million. The news is that the Yankees are "very close" to signing CC to a 7 year deal worth $160 million plus incentives. The Yankees were going after one target this year and it looks like they are going to get him. This probably means that they are not going after AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe. As a Yankee fan, I am happy that they are getting him but they could be overpaying. I don't think there was anyone close to paying him what they are paying him.

It seems like the yankees got their man. It was reported this morning that CC agreed to sign with the Yankees. They said he met with the red sox during the winter meetings. The 1st thing I said was I hope they don't sign him. It's too much money. But it's funny to me cause as a red sox fan, I have been following them since they have been loosingto the Yankees all the yrs in the past. And now they are doing the same thing the Yankees are doing. They are going after all the big name free agents. Teixeira is reported to be more close to signing with boston, and I believe him and his agent are looking for the same amount of money CC is.

I think cc should have stayed in the NL, it was working well for him. That said, no he is not worth that much money,he is a quality pitcher but if he could'nt take the heat in smaller markets he will never make it in NY.
