Thought the letter was from a friend of my husband's but it was not |
|
Around noon, when I went to check the mail, we got the usual advertisement, a credit card application, and one letter that was handwritten addressed to my husband. I told him, "it must be one of your friends from work. Maybe there is a funeral or something," so he opened it and found out it was an advertisement for cleaning furnaces and air conditioners. Now most of the time, they will put address labels on the envelope, or will print them on the computer, or they will buy envelopes with the name of the company already printed on, but this was handwritten. It was really annoying in that it appeared to misrepresent itself as a letter from a friend. So does that happen to you, that you get a letter that appears to be from a friend or someone who might know you personally and it is just an advertisement and how does it make you feel?

Though it's an advertisement, someone actually had to spend time on it to get it to you. It also saves money for the company probably in not having to design and print stationary.
I don't get a lot of male, so I'd be happy getting it regardless.

katrhina23 (1116) | 1 year ago | I agree with you . It is one of the marketing tools. You opened it right? so it is an effective tool. anyway, i received one and it was a survey from a car dealership. I also opened it and just disregard afterwards.

suspenseful (17074) | 1 year ago | So you think I was stupid? It had the man's home address you id---! It was hand written. It could have been from a friend of my husband but next time I will know better to tell you and give all the detail on the envelope in the next post. Do you think that I knew that the guy was so cheap and so evil that he would have put his home address, not his business address, not his business name, but his actual personal name and put a stamp on it, not run it through the postage meter? What if it had been actually from a friend of my husband's and what if he was going to drop in some day? Think about that sm-- al=-!

| zshornick (97) | 1 year ago | I wasn't saying anything bad about you at all. You misunderstand me.
I was saying that it's a smart way to get people to read your mailings becuase they don't expect it to be an ad.
I don't understand why you are so angered by my response.

2. fjaril (4302) | 1 year ago | No I have never gotten that, but it is missleading isn't it.. do you live in a small town and was this business just a home town guy trying to expand?? then I could see it happening, but normally, no..
I did get a hand written chain letter though like this from the husband of a coworker to my wife!! and I thought it was a letter from someone I knew too. For petesakes why ME!! and I resented it as well. I asked how this guy got my address and name, and mu wife told me she had no idea except that her workcomrad worked in personnel..GASP!!!GASP!! what an uncomfortable situation for my wife and she did talk to this person.. awful she felt and I too but it too passed.

suspenseful (17074) | 1 year ago | I live in Winnipeg, and that is a big city, but many of the people are former country folk and it is a good place for families, some are not that sophisticated, but I did not like people to think that I am a hick or something and that we could easily be duped. And what if there had been a real letter from a friend, announcing that he was coming to town, or dropping by, and because of this fake friend letter, we had shredded his? I mean there is more at stake then just saving ink from the printer. Oh and the return address had his name and last name, not the So and So Furnace Company.

3. gemini_rose (10121) | 1 year ago | I have not come across that yet, but it seems that they are always finding new ways to get us to open their rubbish! I do not mind advertising, sometimes I come across a real bargain this way what annoys me is I have to get rid of it and with all the junk that comes through the door each week it is a lot of rubbish to get rid of.

webeishere (12375) | 1 year ago | This actually is one of the oldest advertising ploys. As I stated in my response below yours, about 30 some years ago I worked for the same type bussiness and they hired teens to write out the envelopes for them. It works too as people are curious whose writing to them especially near the holidays. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

suspenseful (17074) | 1 year ago | I never could write that neat when I was a teenager. I was thinking that if someone who knew my husband had written and he had forgotten about it, or maybe someone who knew a friend of his had written and something was wrong, then we would never know about it because it would have been shredded. So in actuality this is very dangerous.

4. webeishere (12375) | 1 year ago | Years ago I worked for a fireplace/furnace cleaning company. And they hired people just to handwrite the envelopes for their business. It is an old advertising ploy that always works. As it gets the person to at least open the mail. A printed one gets tossed as most people know. So I am not shocked to hear about this still happening. I have not seen this in my mail recently. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

7. AmbiePam (15265) | 1 year ago | I've seen my parents get a piece of mail like that before. Because it was handwritten, they thought it must be something from someone they knew. But it wasn't. Just a sneaky way to make sure we look at what they are advertising. I think it works to their disadvantage.

8. BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | That was clever though. It did what it was intended to do and that was get your attention and get you to read it. Which you did.
It may have annoyed you, but I bet it registers in your head now though.

suspenseful (17074) | 1 year ago | I gave it to my husband and he read it. He told me it was just advertising. And the idea of thinking that it could have been from a friend. But what if it had been a real letter from a friend of his? I mean it did not have the name of the company on the envelope, if it had, I would have figured it was an advertisement. I hope you are not indicating that I was a stupid br*d for thinking it was from one of my husband's friends.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Oh heavens no! You could be a stupid broad for a great many really good reasons, but I would have to be labeled a stupid old fart for doing the very thing you did. That kind of cleverness would have caught me too.
I had never heard of a hand written ad like that before now. I just thought from the way you were describing it, that this was one of the more novel approaches to direct mail advertising I have heard in recent times.

9. cream97 (8360) | 1 year ago | Well, if I get any things like this, it would be for work at home jobs.. Many people write to me with many money making advertisements that I can do from home. I have to take a look at it, to see if it is something that I would like to do. But, if I get an letter from an personal friend, then they will have their name on it.

10. ch88ss (1116) | 1 year ago | Oh yes I hate that. The worst part, it is a chain letter too. Other times, it is marketing their latest at home job where they can make thousands at home doing same thing. Like envelope stuffing, writing names on envelopes. IN other words they want me to join them in scamming other individuals in believing they have a job but need them to pay someone $20 for the fee. It should be made illegal for someone to gain information to your address or even email without your consent.

suspenseful (17074) | 1 year ago | They were advertising furnace cleaning and upgrading. The trouble is it was for a certain furnace company and he was probably a sub contractor. Now if I was sub contracting for a company, I would have put out printed fliers without the envelopes, or got someone to type them myself or had the envelopes printed.
