Do you believe the earth was created in 7 days? email this discussion to a friend?

Hi, i was just wondering for christians out there, do you believe that the earth was created in 7 days? Literally?

in Sunday School (when i was younger), we were taught that yes, the world was created in 7 days. However, now that i'm older, i begin to wonder, how can it be true when scientists say that the earth is millions of years old.

also, someone also told me that when you read the accounts of Genesis, it cannot be taken literally. he went on to explain how on how Genesis was probably written by Moses, and written to cater to children so that when they read it, they would understand it. My friend also made this comment that i believe to make a lot of sense "The Bible is God's word revealed to us, it should not be taken as a science book" - this is for christians who literally believe that God created the earth in 7 days because it says so in the bible.

What do you think?

No one was there to count so how do we know? Does it matter?

It appears there are only two explanations for why the universe is here - which sounds more plausible?

1) In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded

2) In the beginning there was nothing and somebody/bodies/God created the universe.

I think there must be a third option, but otherwise I have to go for the second option as the least absurd of the two!

Genesis 1 rings of both metaphorical and historical truths. It was probably written down by Moses or the Levitical Priests under Moses. The days of Genesis are not meant to be taken literally--they are symbolic and theological descriptions of God's power and the purpose of Creation.

It's interesting when we compare the days of Genesis to each other. They're separated by intervals of three.

Day 1: God creates light and separates it from the darkness.
Day 4: God creates the luminaries, the sun and the moon to govern the seasons.

Day 2: God creates the waters and separates the oceans and the sky.
Day 5: God creates the fish to rule the oceans and the birds to rule the sky.

Day 3: God creates land and plants
Day 6: God creates animals and man to rule the land and the plants.

It is a metaphorical passage. But I disagree with your friend's assertion that Moses wrote it for children. Where does he see this? This, I think, probably comes from his "21st Century Sunday School" impression of the lesson. Moses did not author a children's story; he authored a theological story of creation.

This does not call into question the historical significance of the passage. Metaphor or myth did not mean what we think it means. It calls into question the extent of the historicity of the passage (meaning, how literally we read it). But it does not call into question the accuracy or historical value of the passage.

Sometimes it seem difficult for we human to understand these things, because we don't even have a fraction of power compare to God...but then if nuclear bombs can bring down cities in minutes, then it makes sense to believe that the world was created in 6 days.

myLot reputation of 83/100. jedimind (141)   ranked 125 out of 2,206 in christian  1 year ago

true. i have no problem with God being able to create the earth in 6 days. He could do anything He wants because he is God. i only wonder how we should view creation in the light of all the scientists telling us that the world was create millions of years ago

I was discussing the topic with one of my friends today and he put a new meaning into it,although I don't know if it makes much sense...He said days in the sight of God might be several years to us human.

From what I heard, "7 days" is a metaphor so that the people could relate to it, back in the time of Jesus saying "The Earth was formed over millions of years" would surely confuse some people.

What warrant is there to say that it was NOT 6 literal days, (creation was only 6 - on the 7th, He rested)? Is God's arm too short to accomplish His purposes? Is God limited by the constraints of time? That would be absurd!

God created time, He, Himself, is apart, above and outside of time; God is eternal past and future. The Bible teaches that the first 5 books were scribed by Moses from the dictation of God when they spoke face to face. There is no reason to think that God was painting metaphorical pictures for us in giving us the creation account the way He did.

It has been suggested that they could have been day-ages, but I think that, that accounting only makes it easier for us to wrap our mortal minds around the creation which leapt into being at the command of God. Faith, without faith, is NOT faith. Either believe or don't believe, but don't try to create a blend of humanisticly altered theologies to make everyone happy. It can not be done.

God Bless

yes, i agree with this:) very well explained! sometimes it's a bit difficult thinking about things like this and how man came to be.

myLot reputation of 83/100. jedimind (141)   ranked 125 out of 2,206 in christian  1 year ago

i agree too. but on the other hand, we cannot take everything the bible says to be in the literal sense. in the new testament, Jesus tells us to eat of his body and drink of his blood. if you are to take it literally, that would be cannibalism. Apparently, the roman catholics last time used to imagine that they were really eating Jesus' body and drink his blood when partaking of the communion. this is known as trans-substantiation.

i just think that the knowledge we have now is more than what they had last time. My friend told me that we cannot be narrow-minded when science reveals something more. Imagine this. A man from a tribe who's never been in contact with the outside world sees an areoplane flying overhead. He sees it and calls it a big bird. We however, know that it is in fact an aeroplane.

In the same way, now science has revealed to us certain things, and we cannot just say it's false because it didn't say so in the bible. we have to be open-minded about these things

I think that we CAN take the Bible literally IF we understand the context and the obvious nature of the metaphores used. I re-state that there is no Biblical warrant to think that creation did not occur in 6 literal, 24 hour days; and now to address your example of the body and the blood.

This was an obvious symbolic metaphore intended to serve as a rite of rememberance in regard to the sacrifice that Jesus was about to offer for us. "After supper Jesus took bread and broke it saying,'This is my body, take and eat of it.'" He did NOT hack off a finger and pass it around saying, "Have a bite and pass it on." In the same way, He never intended that we should literally drink blood to be able to abide with Him. In fact, if He had, it would have been a violation of the law of God which precluded the eating of blood, (even in animal flesh).

I have never found a case where the Bible was wrong, or inadequate to answer any question or situation that glorifies God and His Son Jesus Christ. I HAVE found many occasions where I was too unlearned to understand the answers. Every failing in reasoning from Scripture is my own failing, never Scripture's.

One thing that has helped me is to remove the word, "if," from my vocabulary when considering Biblical issues. Instead of saying, "If God could....." I change it to be, "Since God did ....." This puts the onus on me to understand whatever the Bible says as absolute truth instead of looking for ways to sidestep the infallibility of God's Word. The story of the creation in Genesis was taken from an older (2000 year older) story of the Sumerians. And no, I do not believe it was 7 literal days, this is a metaphor of steps God used to create not the earth, but life on the earth, If you read earth was not created on day one, it was created in the begging, no time period between the beginning and the "first day", it could have been 14 billion years ago.

christians believe that the earth was created in 7 days because it was written in Genesis. I believe that God has no problem creating the earth in 7 days because He is God, anything is possible for Him.

however, i just think that from the account in Genesis, we cannot be narrow-minded and say just because the bible said 7, it really meant 7 days. instead, we should consider the fact that in the light of what scientists tell us, they could be right as well.

I can honestly say i do not know. I am a Christian and it is hard to believe that it was created in week, but that is what the bible tells us. Many people just say it is a story to explain how the earth was created but it is not the true story. How would man know how it was created. The story if Adam and Eve were the first male and female. If so, then we are all brothers and sisters. I do not get it, so it all counts down to our faith ..

I think the seven days was not literally seven days. I am not of a bible reader but I was schooled in a christian school in my grade 1 to 3 and my high school years and we have tackle this topic often. I had forgot about this topic but I just want to believe that it is.
