Chickens as pets?

I just read this article: http://www.latimes.com/features/home/la-hm-chickens6-2008dec06,0,6975632.story about keeping chickens as pets - not people who live on a farm mind you - but city dwellers! The article states benefits such as "They reduce garbage by eating your leftovers mixed in with their feed, and they will pick off those irritating caterpillars destroying the vegetable garden. Their poop is an excellent composting aid, and they will even trim your grass and weed for you, if you let them. Added benefits: farm-fresh eggs right from the backyard and the amusement of impressing friends with an interesting new pet -- and for many it is a pet, not a future entree." My question is... would you ever keep a chicken as a pet?

I've had chickens before, but never in the city! LOL I didn't really consider these chickens pets, but I didn't eat them either. LOL However, I did eat the eggs that they laid. They were a lot better than any store bought eggs, that's for sure. Not only were the chickens that I had free range, but they ate an organic diet as well. A couple of other strange pets I've had was a turkey and ducks.

I forgot to add, I wouldn't have chickens now. At least not while I own the dogs that I do.

Yeah I have some experience with chickens as pets, my great great grandmother had about 4 roosters and 8 hens she keep in a chicken pen with nest she would get their eggs and eat them, she always wanted me to eat them but I couldn't it was a little gross the eggs were pinkish orange. Yeah she still has them but is trying to catch the roosters now..,only bad thing about them is they poop everywhere.
