Oral Hygiene - Do You Get Your Teeth Cleaned Every Six Months?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers 4 years ago

Very straight forward question, do you? I went today after a year of not having them cleaned. They booked another appointment for me in six months and told me that my teeth are nice and I shouldn't risk ruining them by not having them cleaned every half a year (but I had no problems.. xD).

I don't feel that it's necessary to have them cleaned that often if you brush and floss well. Once a year, I can fully understand as important, however, six months makes me feel like it's more about the money rather than the oral hygiene. I know it's been proven by scientists that it's essential to have them checked and cleaned every six months; I guess it's just me being stupid here. =P

How about you? How often do you go to the dentist?

I go to the dentist very rarely. xD I honestly can't remember the last time I got my teeth "cleaned" - maybe once a few years ago, but I have no memory of it. O.o I can't even remember how they did it if they did at all, and I honestly didn't even know that cleaning was so important. xD

I go to the dentist only if I have pain, I don't go for check-ups or anything of the kind. I hate going there because they try to force me into getting braces, which I really don't want to do. xD

So yeah, I wouldn't say that I'm exactly your model for oral hygiene. =P

Hehe. =P Going for regular check ups will help keep your gums and teeth healthy as well as detect any early problems such as gum disease, oral cancer (I didn't know that existed either!) and cavities (you don't want to leave cavities too long or else thing get pretty nasty! ninja).

I take pretty good care of my teeth too and my dentist always says the same thing.. I notice though while I sit there that he does scrape away a little deposit(yuck) like granular somethingorother from the teeth at the very front at the bottom now and again. It is such a little bit and takes less than a second that I wonder if he needs to find something.. anything. I ask, he says O nothing.. just a little tansten toothstone?? I wish I knew th english word right now!! but that it is normal after so long a time and I have very very little and just to keep doing what I am doing.( he means to my teeth, of course)w00t
He is also one to take Xrays.. he says to keep on top of changes and that's okej with me too.

Hi only calls me in once a year though. I dont question his reasoning. He knows also that I WILL call if there is anything at all, like inflamed gums or such.

Perhaps he is too busy OR he feels it isnt necessary to see certain people more than once a year?? Hmmm. Now I am curious too.. since I was just there LAST month for the yearly business. I may not know for some time, eh?

Cant be for the extra money HERE though.. different customs?

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Yeah, I don't mind X-rays being taken either. Are they yearly or what? I can't remember. =P My dentist doesn't call me, but that's probably because my regular one lives in California and I go every summer anyways. The only reason I had my appointment in December this year was because I couldn't get one during those two months.

You're right, it's probably not for the money. They actually do want us to have clean mouths (that sounds odd.. xD). But when they tell you that you need to see them every six months, I don't find it exactly true. Even though I know it's been proven that it's better to have checkups twice a year, I can't help thinking that once a year is enough. o_o

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)   ranked 245 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

So far they have been NOT every year at all. I wonder if it has to do with changes and age that he takes Xrays. I know he has done it when he will work on a tooth if there is cavity. I would be surprised also if he says I am doing well looking after my teeth thatI would need to go more often.. THAT I would question. like you say,, why indeed?

Honestly, I only visit the dentist when I feel that there is something wrong with my teeth. Well, I do not also visit the dentist every six months to have my oral cleaning. Actually, I just went to the dental clinic last week because two of my teeth needs repair. Too bad because one cannot be saved by permanent filling anymore. It needs root canal or extraction already. This is probably the consequence of not paying a visit to my dentist timely.

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Ugh, that really sucks. sad That's the main reason I get worried for people who don't get their teeth checked annually. No one wants to be in the situation where they need a root canal or extraction. doh

I'm glad your other tooth could be saved, though. I'm guessing you're going to be going to the dentist more regularly now? lol

I go to the dentist if I have time. Not really every six month but at least I go in a year. I used to go out of the country many times that is why it is hard for me to find time to see a dentist.

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Ah, we have similar reasons for not visiting every six months. My dentist lives in the US and I only go there during summer. I understand how traveling a lot makes it hard to get appointments on a regular basis - not impossible though. There are dentists around the world. =P But still, it's nicer to have a "regular dentist".

Yes! I agree to that... It is never the same to have your personal dentist.

ME? I always go to my dentist every 6 months to make sure my teeth is cleaned. Coz i hate to see cavities.. So i do the same with my daughter.

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Yes, visiting every six months means the chances of getting cavities is reduced significantly. It's good that you're making sure both you and your daughter are regularly visiting to keep that advantage.^_^

hi zezlol.

like you, i think that getting your mouth checked every 6 months is really more about the money that about hygiene. i do brush everyday and after every meal but i don't floss regularly. i just find getting a piece of floss between my teeth annoying. anyway, i had my teeth and gums checked last november but i was originally scheduled to have it checked last august so the delay really pissed off my dentist. lol! anyway, i try to visit my dentist at least twice a year but not necessarily every 6 months. whenever my schedule permits it, i do have my check-up. i just think that there are better ways of getting healthy teeth and gums that sitting in a dentist's chair and opening your mouth and saying "aahhhh!!!".

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

It's great that you you visit the dentist at least twice a year. I don't really think there are "better" ways of getting healthy teeth and gums than getting a check up. There are other alternatives, sure, but, ultimately, nothing beats having a dentist stare into your mouth while forcing you to open your jaw as wide as possible.

i had my teeth cleaning last july and going to have another cleaning this january 2009. i find it useful because it gives me more confidence, i don't know but that's what i feel when i i got my teeth cleaned by my dentist.

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Totally understand. After I get my teeth cleaned I just feel a lot better, not necessarily because my mouth is cleaner (er..) but because I know that there's nothing wrong. It certainly does bring more confidence to get that dentist appointment over with! ninja

Yes, I go to the dentist every six months! There was a time though when I would not go at all and then I started getting aches and pains and so forth. Now, I'm extra careful and always make sure that I'm sitting in that dentist chair! I just hate the drilling aspect of the cleaning, I just cannot stand that dentist drill! I hope that the technology improves and that this infamous tool will no longer be used! My dentist told me that I should start flossing but I have never been able to get into that process! I brush my teeth twice a day; I used to brush them three times a day, after every meal! I think that this was quite excessive though. I will be very happy in old age if I don't have to wear false teeth; life will then be over for me! Andrew

myLot reputation of 94/100. Zezlol (303)   ranked 501 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  4 years ago

Hehe.=P I hate that drill too! especially the noise it makes! ninja Yes, flossing can be annoying. I don't mind it much anymore, only my bottom fronts bug me because I have glued-on retainers that are very hard to get around. =[

I'm quoting this from another site by the way. It's pretty interesting:

Recent studies have made a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Who knew such a seemingly little thing could make such a big difference? In the book, "Real Age" by Michael F. Roizen, MD, Dr. Roizen calculates how old a person really is, not just in years but by taking into account a person's lifestyle, eating habits, and fitness level. According to Roizen, daily flossing can add 6.3 years to your life. That's a long time!

Hw writes, "These studies show that the presence of periodontal diseases, diseases most common in people with tooth loss, actually affects longevity. The best of these studies done at Emory University with the Centers for Disease Control, indicated that people with gingivitis and periodontitis have a mortality rate that is 23 percent to 46 percent higher than those who don't. Skipping the floss is linked to increased rates of cardiovascular diseases and stroke as well as to an increase in mortality from other causes, such as infections." at the very least, flossing will help ensure that you keep your real teeth, rather than having to deal with dentures down the road.

Bleah... I want to be able to copy-paste! lol
