Are you afraid of becoming addicted to pain meds if you suffer from chronic pain? Do you follow you Dr.'s directions on how to take the meds or do you cut back on what you are allowed to take because you are afraid that you will become addicted? Do you end up in the hospital because the pain has become so bad that what you have at home isn't doing the job?

I can answer all the questions in the following ways.

Yes, I cut back, and yes. I've been told that I am only causing myself more pain then is necessary and it's probably true. I am afraid of becoming addicted so I try to deal with the pain for as long as I can. I don't like the way I feel after taking the meds the way the Dr. has perscribed. I am always sleepy, I can't think straight, I forget things. Sometimes I'd rather bite the bullet just a little longer than waste my day in bed, staring bleary-eyed at TV. I know that I will always be in pain at some level or the other, but trying to keep active or at least for me, what is active, is better than being doped up.

The one thing that I do know that I have only caused myself is that the dosage on the pain meds have been increased. I was going to the hospital more than usually for the pain. There I get dilaudid by IV. The meds that I take at home were increased to keep me from having to be admitted until the pain is back under control.

Anyone else going through this or am I really just being stupid?

My brother is finishing up his residents program and is a doctor. He told me that NONE of the pain pills we take are addicting with the exception of 2 Roxys and 1 other. See what happens is people who have addictive personalities are the ones who get addicted. You may like how the drug is effecting you and it puts you in a different state, but you are not addicted to them. You may miss them for a few days after they are gone, but you are missing the feeling that they put your body in. Addictive personalities will get addictive to anything, but as he told me when I was taking pain pills for a tooth ache and had 2 refills, you can do without them when they are gone and you don't go crazy. He refers to it like alcoholism. People may like to have a drink or 2 at night and maybe even everyday, BUT that doesn't make them a alcoholic. If you can function without it and you don't need it to get through the day, your not addicted. I have been on plently of pain ills and I love how I feel when I am on them, but when they are gone even after taking them for 2 1/2 wks every 4 hours with out missing a dose, I didn't feel I was addicted. Its mind over matter and has alot to do with personality. I wouldn't worry about becoming addicted unless you have that type of personality.

I know I don't have an addictive personality. I never miss them when I don't have to take them. I do get the headaches for a day or two when I'm not taking them. I guess that I am being overly protective of myself over it. Thanks shihtzumama.
