Runes readings  

Try listening to what the runes have to say when you lay down a spread, some times you will hear more details then what the 'textbook' answers are. Also, unlike tarot cards, the position which the runes drop are important in a reading too.

If you're up for the challenge, find the old rune poems online and read them, it will help you understand them better.

Most readers use the blank rune as a 'joker' to replace any runes they accidentally lose, it doesn't have any meaning in a more traditional set.
