I am looking for tips on how to make those pretty black and white photos that have just that one object in color. And just other tips on the program. Thanks
Happy Holidays!

Personally I do not care for gimp, as it doesn't have a lot of options. I use paint.net, and best of all its free also, and has many plug ins you can download. If you want to try it out,I can tell you how to do the seletive coloring, it is quite simple in paint.net

I'm not familiar with Gimp, but I do use Photoshop to edit my photos. That technique is called "selective coloring". There are several different ways you can achieve that effect. I even have a Sony point and shoot camera that can create selective color photos right on the camera!
One way is to duplicate the layer, desaturate the top layer, then use the eraser to erase the places you want to be in color.
Another way is to select the places you want to be in color (either by using the magic wand tool, lasso tool, selecting a color range, etc.) then invert the selection and desaturate the area.
If you want to keep one color in the photo (for example just the red or just the blue) and make the rest black and white, you can chose to just desaturate individual color channels.
Now, I know you can do all of those in Photoshop, but I'm not sure about Gimp.
