Have you ever wondered about sayings and their meanings.  

I have heard of the sayings you have mentioned but realy never wondered about them.
What I wonder about is who coined the terms for items we use everday. Who decided an iron would be called an iron or for that matter why do we call an apple and apple? Why do we call a candle a candle and so forth. The origin of these and many other names eludes me.

Some of them do make sense, but I have to admit that there are many that seem to completely defy explanation. The sandboy example is a new one for me actually as I have not heard that one before. We have a slightly different version of the dog with two tails example in my country too. Let's just say that our equivalent is in relation to the dog being happy because he has two OTHER appendages instead! As for the pot calling the kettle black, I never even knew that pots had phones!

One that has always amused and intrigued me at the same time is: "They are dumber than a sack full of hammers!" How the heck did someone come up with this one you think??
