I've always figured that they were nearly the same, but after reading your question I decided to look at an article or two and this is what I came across:
Notebooks are very light and designed for portability. They don't have a very strong graphics system or a DVD or CD system. They're very thin, with screens that are generally smaller than those of laptops. They have a small keyboard and should be designed to have long battery life. Basically, they're made for travelling or carrying purposes, with usually every possible aspect made as small and light as possible. Their advantage over laptops is that they can be carried around every day with very little effort.
Laptops are a completely different story. They're designed to remain stationary and aren't made with aspects of portability in mind as notebooks are. They have various features, larger screens, a normal-sized keyboard, and a proper graphics card and system. They're ideal for having a computer (that isn't as large as your desktop) on the table or in your lap, but aren't has handy as notebooks.
Basically, notebooks have all the essentials compressed as compactly as possible while laptops, although heavier, contain features and maximize the performance of the machine. If you're planning to take your computer with you to work every day, I would advise a notebook, but if you just want a handy computer for home, laptops are the better choice. Hope I helped.
