Holiday Gift Cards

I heard John Tesh talking on the radio about holiday shopping tips. He said that if you buy someone a gift card, have them use it right away because many more sotres are going out of business in the near future. He suggested to buy Mall gift cards, or Visa tpye that can be used in many locations, rather than a store specific one to minimize the risk. Any thoughts?
