Jeremiah 10: 2-5 states:

"Thus says the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not; they must needs be borne, because thy cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good."

So it appears that God is definitely against Christmas.

I'm pretty sure you are correct at that. It seems like we "worship" a tree decorated with lights and ornaments. But, I celebrate Christmas as a tradition with my family. Not necessarily what it's supposed to be. I'm an atheist basically so it does not bother me that we are not supposed to celebrate Christmas. I just like getting together with family and distant relatives that I have not seen in quite awhile.=]

A couple of things...

To more accurately state the Biblical position on Christmas, you should have written, "ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE, WE'RE NOT COMMANDED TO RECOGNIZE CHRISTMAS."

The verse you use is not about Christmas trees at all. It must remain in context and that is in reference to the worship of idols. It could just as easily read, that, "man picks up a block of wood off the floor of the sawmill and whittles it into a shape and gilds it in the molten gold-pot." Would you then conclude that God was set against sawmills?

You are correct in that the Christian is not required to observe any birthdays, (not even that of the Christ child), but to say that we are in violation of the will of God to have a Christmas tree is a bit of a stretch, especially when you use the verse you do to bolster your assertion.

If you read your Bible, you will see that God apparently has no problem with the observance of a "New Moon Festival", even though nowhere does He command that we do so. You can not make conclusive statements concerning the Word of God unless you leave them in context and allow the WHOLE Word of God to speak through the verse you want to hold up as proof.

God Bless

Ah, yes. You are absolutely correct. Just leaving the verse out like that would make it seem like I took the verse out of context to prove a point, so I will elaborate a little further.

First, let's break down the verse because it is a bit King Jamesy old-Englishy,

"Thus says the Lord" This, of course, means God says. That's pretty plain and simple. If God is telling us do not follow the ways of the heathen who stand up a tree and hammer it to the ground and put tinsel on it, then it tells me that we're not supposed to do it.

Of course, since this was quoted in the book of Jeremiah which is part of the Old Testament that came out long before Christ was born, the gentiles of those days did not call it a Christmas tree. They probably named it something else.

He specifically cited the example of the chopping down of a tree, propping it up with a hammer and nails and putting silver and gold on it. It's very similar to what we do with the Christmas tree.

God specifically pointed out not to celebrate this tradition long before Jesus died on the cross. Jesus rose again and ascended into Heaven, and some 2008 years later we are still using Christmas trees. So wouldn't that be a major disobedience to God. Here's a link to a site that gives some information about it: http://www.thercg.org/que... you tell me where in the bible where God has no problem with the "New Moon Festival"? I don't recall reading that verse. Thank you.

You need not interpret, I do King Jamesy, just fine!

The New Moon thing is in Col. 2:16 and it says that we are not to let anyone judge us in the keeping of.... This is not a command to keep the festival, but neither does it say that it is wrong to do so, (as long as we are not worshipping the full moon, but that we can celebrate an event that God has wrought), and hints that the observance of same is within the bounds of acceptability.

The Jeremiah verse is about idolatry! Consider this... When Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem he cut down trees, held them up with hammers and nails and covered them with silver and gold. This fits the verse you use as well as Christmas trees do, and we know that God filled the temple with His glory, so He must have been OK with the temple construction.

In Jeremiah's day there would have been no Christmas anyway. If the festival existed at all, it would have been the pagan Saturnella. (sp?) If you want to argue that Christmas is pagan in origin, you won't get an argument from me. But if you want to use a verse concerning idol worship to put down Christmas, you will.

God Bless

I read the bible but I don't use it to rule my life. So, I wouldn't know about what should and should not be celebrated. Cheers and Merry Christmas!!

Christmas is the holiday we celebrate to represent the day of Jesus' birth. It's up to you whether you want to celebrate it or not.

I don't have a christmas tree, but I celebrate CHRISTmas. Problem solved. Yeah, the tree is a pagan holiday. I've only been cursed by the darn Christmas tree. Previous times,Every year it was a fight when to get it out; I'd rather celebrate CHRISTmas.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Christmas, though many may celebrate it the wrong way. To me, every day is Christmas. Every day I celebrate Jesus' life and death. Every day should be like Christmas, in the every day we should worship Jesus.
