The first time I visited the states, I was amazed by the highways, overpasses I saw there. That was in the early 90s. On a flight from Detroit to San Francisco, I was shocked by the chess-board like highways covering the country, east to west, north to south.
Believe it or not, when coming back from that trip, many of my colleagues got to find the roads we had been used to becoming so narrow. But since then, great changes have taken place. We get easy access to places across the country. And plans are being put to execution for a more convenient traffic system.
But for travel in China, the real issue is the roads directly leading to the individual natural scenic spots. That part of the traffic must be optimized as basis for satisfactory travel in China.

When I went to Los Angeles it took some time to get used to the size of the city. Many of its roads are major ones with lots of traffic. The American people value cars in the day to day lives. I haven't yet been to China but I would really love to. It is a large country and better roads are being constructed there. I would travel around by train because it is my favorite form of transportation. China has become a more modern country. So far I have been to Singapore three times and to Hong Kong once. Those are really modern places and car ownership in Singapore is interesting.

People have different focus when travelling in China, soming intered in historic spots, some in natural scenes, and elderly prople just come and go after staying a few days in big cities. Beijing is absolutely the No.1 choice, a place of capital for many dynasties, boasting of grand palaces and resort places. Shanghai is an unique matropolis in mainland China... Another beautiful coastal city is Da Lian. You must have heard about Xi An where the underneath was dugged out for exhibition at a large scale. As for scenic spots, among others, I would highly recommend Huang Shan, or Mount Huang, and Tibet.
Traffic is easy to arrange, including train, which is your favorate. And accomodation is at reasonable price. In big cities, you can also find food from all continents. Take your time, but start planning soonest possible.
