You are correct. First of all, water soluable vitamins are some those that, if used in excess, you pee it out... no harm done. Some vitamins and minerals are not like that however. A great example is potassium. Too much of that and a heart attack occurs. Second, a lot of vitamins work together to provide more absorption. For another example: Taking vitamin B12 and vitamin D together helps them absorb each other better as well as folic acid. If you were taking vitamin B12 alone VS with D, your levels would be lower if you took B12 alone. All of the named vitamins above help with immunity and energy.
Knowledge of all these can pay off: I discovered a year ago that I have a genetic disorder that doesnt allow me to convert folic acid so my chances of having a normal child (one without spina bifida, Down's Syndrome, etc) were very low... Like 30%. Thanks to my wonderful doctor, my chances of having a normal child have skyrocketed to 92%. I have to take a balance of Vitamin D, and injection of B12 and a folic acid pill (RX strength) every day.
Hope this helped and didnt confuse you further!
