What does Drawing and Painting Mean to You?

This is definitely an open-ended question to many of you aspiring artists out there, but I wonder what drawing and painting does for the individual. In other words, for me, someone whose real talents lie in writing rather than drawing and painting, use both to relax and to reflect on life and what I love about life. I enjoy the oceans of the world and their wonders, so I draw and paint seascapes. I enjoy the study and the history of lighthouses, so I draw and paint lighthhouse scenes. I enjoy the study and outer space and its continuous mysteries, so I draw and paint space scenes.
Again, I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I have come to enjoy what I can do. It is not an inexpensive hobby, but it is certainly worth the fun and the challenge. I draw and paint from visions rather than sitting in front of what I am drawing and painting. I do try to use tips from the internet or from books that I find in the hobby stores, but again, I like to use my imagination.
So, what does the hobby or the experience of drawing do for you? Does it relax you? Does it bring out your creativity and your imagination, or is it just doodling because there is nothing else to do?
