We are looking into purchasing a donkey. We don't know which type we would like . Can anyone tell us anything about donkeys? Like which kind would make good as a pet. (outdoors in a barn ) We have just started looking online for information on donkeys, but we would like to have some real input. How much work is a donkey? What can you get your donkey to do as to working? What do you feed them? Do they need company? What kind of company? Are they ok to be left alone for days at a time? Anything you know or have experience to do with donkeys or a horse let us know! Thanks.

Hey Keely, I had a donkey when I was younger....he lived in our field at my house and was very cute but a pain in the backside too. I dont know if it was because he was only young but he did not want to settle. He was forever breaking out of the field. We made high fences and he dug under.....we filled in the tunnels and he ran through the fence posts. He did not like to be kept in the field. He ate alsorts of things.....veg, fruit, hay and grass and straw. He also ate neighbours trees, flowers and bushes and one guy took my father to court over the loss of some bushes. You couldnt really teach the donkey anything much....they arent horses.....and you couldnt ride him. So really he was just a pet who didnt really like being a pet. They are very sociable creatures and should be kept with others really or at least have some company of sorts all the time. Every time my donkey escaped it was to be with the other horses in the other fields near where we lived. One of the other troubles with a donkey is the noise they make. Every morning at 5am he would bray for about an hour. And he would bray again in the evening when it started to dull over. If you live near other people you might want to ask them their thoughts about having braying waking them up every morning. Oh...and I wouldnt leave any animal for days at a time without someone checking on them as anything could happen. A farmer wouldnt even leave his sheep without getting someone to check on them. What if the donkey fell and broke a bone? The vets bills for animals such as donkeys and horses are also very high....and insurance doesnt cover all the routine stuff such as injections, check ups and neutering. He was more trouble than anything else and eventually he went to live on a very big farm with other donkeys and horses and he was much happier. I wouldnt get a donkey again....not as a single animal anyway. A horse would be a better animal to pick as they are quiet, dont mind being on their own and are easier to handle. You cannot compare horses and donkeys at all. They are both big....thats about it :-))
