Is A Woman A Pastor?  | | | |  I have been a born again Christian for many years and have taken care to study the bible to learn first hand what the word of God says. Moreso, as back in my university days, we were often caught up in arguments relating to how authentic those who speak in tongues were and things like that. I also took up voluntary work in church mainly as a Sunday school teacher in a Baptist church, but oftentimes, I have wondered why certain practices are allowed.
Notably, the scripture says in I Tim 2:12 'And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.' (NKJV) I get amazed at the flagrant disobedience of this scripture as women are even more in number in the Sunday school as teachers. Thanks to my electronic bible that contains so much more than a paper bible can. I get so much information from commentaries, other bible versions, dictionaries and the like.
One of the commentaries I use most, Family Bible Notes, explains it better as follows:
Nor to usurp authority meaning as she would should she undertake publicly to teach. It is the revealed will of God that public religious teachers should be men, not women. He has alloted to them different spheres of action, and the perfection of each consists not in aspiring or submitting to occupy the place of the other, but in performing their own appropriate duties.
Wow! This is most mind bugging with the array of female teachers on parade. I even learned from a baptist history site that the issue was a controversial one with an exceptional story of how one woman performed so well that nearly all the students left a man's Sunday school class for hers. I think the issue here is not ability but permission to teach and should be obeyed.
Apostle Paul was directed by the Holy Spirit through out his ministry so he couldn't have given those instructions of himself. Even if we were to argue that he did, he said himself that he has the mind of Christ so I don't understand why this instruction is not being upheld in the Churches.
By extension, a Pastor is also a teacher and if a woman is not permitted to teach except presumably children, how then can she be a pastor? Is this a shame or is it?

| | Hey, redhotpogo - I both agree and disagree with you. Timothy was called to carry on the work of the ministry under Paul's tutelage. As such, he was no ordinary man; he was a Spirit filled young pastor. All are sinners, I agree, but all believers are supposed to put on a new self that gratifies the desires of the Spirit of God not still wallowing in the deeds and pleasures of the flesh. True, Timothy was a follower as we all are. Even pastors are called under-shepherd supposedly working under the chief shepherd who is Christ. | |  I think that what is being said is that a woman is not to usurp the ordained authority of a Godly man in the church. It is a matter of understanding the roles we all are supposed to play.
Take a look and you will see Biblical accounts of women teaching. Today, in the church it's true that there are a lot of women in roles of authority either in the pulpit or Sunday Schools. IF there is no man to fill these roles, then I think that it is better to have a woman in that role rather than to have no one to teach at all but it is symptomatic of a larger problem. Where are the Godly men? What kind of congregation can find no man to assume the role? This is a church that is in trouble!
I can not sit under a woman's pastorage, (and there are men who do a horrible job as well). I would rather home-church than endure the apostacy hour and then mingle around as though something wonderful was happening.

| | Thanks for the contribution fundamentalcharlie. I don't understand what you mean by apostacy hour though. Also, I don't know of any Bible accounts of women teaching except when bringing up a child.
My experience is that even when you try to correct this, it is met with stiff and even irrational resistance by other men in the Church. Are we to please man or God? I was asked to prove that a woman should not teach by my youth president when I objected to a nomination of a woman as Bible study co-ordinator. She has actually held that office for up to 4 years (cannot exceed 4 years constitutionally) and there were other capable men around including myself. The nominations have always been women since I raised an objection years ago.
I wasn't very vocal about my objections earlier because I thought God actually prophesied through the prophet Jeremaiah that a woman shall surpass a man (Jer 31:22). Little did I know that the interpretation relates to the birth of Christ as seen in the commentaries:
A woman shall compass a man; commonly interpreted of our Lord's miraculous conception in the womb of the virgin Mary; and this agrees well with the context, for his incarnation was the highest pledge that God could give the church of his love for her, and his purpose to redeem her from the power of her enemies.
I even felt more strongly about it when I found this scripture 'As for my people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of our paths.' (NKJV)
Some explain a woman pastor as called by the Spirit, but this is clearly a complain of the Spirit of God. A woman is not expected by God to lead the people of God. Can we straighten what has been made crooked? | | | |

| | I am referring to Priscilla, (Acts 18:26). It speaks of her and Aquila as teaching Apollos. It does not specifically say she taught, however; the pronouns indicate that, "they," - plural - Invited Apollos to their house and instructed him.
As to the question of whether or not the trend might be reversed, I doubt it. I think that we will see far worse things as we near the end of days. While it would be nice, (in a human view), for things to be on earth as they are to be in Heaven, it can not be. We will see the perfection of the ways of the Lord in eternity and we need to praise Him for the decay we see around us because it is the fulfillment of the things that must come.
