| Oh wow, it's a few days late, but I have a few hints that generally work for next time. The first suggestion is NEVER mix your alcohol. Well, on New Years, one obligatory glass of champagne is fine, but pick your poison and stick with it. Also try to avoid really sweet drinks or ones mixed with a cola or very sweet soda. All the sugar rapidly increases your dehydration, which causes you to feel like garbage the next day. If you can, try alternating each alcoholic drink with a nonalcoholic one. Or just have a glass of water on hand and use it to wet your whistle on occasion. Also, do NOT take aspirin before you go to bed as it can irritate your stomach -- in the morning, take one if everything else fails, but not before bedtime. Always eat before drinking (and preferably after if there's somewhere open). Anyway, onto my hangover hints: -Before you go out, since you'll probably forget, leave a few bottles of water by your sleeping area, and as soon as you get back there, down as much as you can. You'll probably have to wake up in a few hours to pee, so do, and then drink some more and so on. If it works like it should, you'll be up every few hours peeing and downing more H20. This is the most important thing. If you do it enough times, your dehydration level will be almost nil in the morning which means NO HEADACHE (YAY!) and no post-party shudders. -Have a shower. Nothing is worse than waking up hungover to smell like stale booze and/or cigarettes/cigars. Your sense of smell is probably hyper sensitive and all it takes is one off smell to turn your tummy. Get clean. -Eat some protein. Eggs, bacon, ham, beans, whatever. Get some protein in you. I'm not sure why, but it helps. -A glass or OJ or a small tin of tomato soup seems to counteract the acidity in your stomach. This is why people will often drink Bloody Mary's or Caesars on a Sunday.. trying to counteract that acidity. Another good hint is sport drinks like Gatorade or Powerade. They contain electrolytes which you body craves in it's dehydrated state. -Pop a multivitamin. Remember all those times you went to the men's room the night before? You lost precious vitamins while you were draining the main vein.. now's the time to replenish them. Make sure they contain Vitamin C, B, A and Potassium. -DON'T DRINK COFFEE. I can't tell you how many times I made this mistake assuming the java would perk me up and get me moving. It's a natural diuretic (makes you pee) and you'll lose more precious vitamins and hydration. -Have a nap. If you were drinking water and peeing all night, you're going to be exhausted. Since the only surefire hangover cure is time, and it's much too painful to stay awake, go to bed. Best of luck! |
