Do you think Barry Bonds should come back? email this discussion to a friend?

Barry Bonds never officialy retired from baseball. It was reported the other day that he just had hip surgery and would like to play ball this upcoming season. Many teams don't wanna deal with the so called media attention that Bonds would recieve, and think that it would have a negative impact on the club house. I read on espn that the players union has evidence of the team owners having an agreement not to sign Bonds, and they are going to file a grievance. You can't hold teams responsible for the reason why Bonds isn't playing. I'm pretty sure there are many free agents out there that haven't been awarded contracts during the off season. It's obvious with Bonds that the steroid case is an issue. Every team has a right to sign a player or not for what ever reason they choose. It is believed that Bonds is still a very good hitter and could help alot of ball clubs. So the question is ahould he still try to come back even though he has been banned by team owners, plus the fact that he hasn't played in a year or two?

I think it's outrageous that Barry Bonds has been out of baseball for as long as he has. He has never been proven guilty of anything and he is one of the, if not the, greatest hitters to ever play the game. He won MVPs and was an All Star back at the beginning of his career when he was much smaller and the steroids weren't an issue. No amount of any kind of performance enhancing drug can give you an eye for the ball like Barry Bonds has. I've been hoping my hometown Marlins would pick him up as a veteran presence that would bring some much needed fans to the games for perhaps a smaller contract with performance incentives. Only time will tell if Barry Bonds will continue to be outcast due to the media circus that follows him, but I think it's a real shame.

The good thing about Bonds is that any team can get him at a huge discount according to the baseball analysts. Your Marlins would be able to sign him at the league minimum. The only thing about Bonds is that I don't know how good he could still be as an outfielder in the national league. I figured he would be looking to be a full time dh, or maybe even a 1st baseman. It's sucks that he's being penalized for the media attention that he gets in the locker room. He has no control over that. Teams are treating him as if he's walking around with a camera crew behind him on purpose. And that's not the case. It's not fair to penalize him for somethig he has no control over.

Barry Bonds should retire. He has such a large negative following that any team that he goes to will probably be cast into a negative light without him they would probably be better off. Imagine what would happen if he came back and did not do much good how foolish that team would look. I think MLB is better off without the constant distraction that he provides and the negative light that he shines on his teams due to the "scandals" surronding him.

If Bonds can still play the game after being away this long, we will never know. The sad thing is that he is being punished for all the media attention he gets in the locker room. don't think it's fair to penalize someone for the amount of attention they get from reporters and news cameras. Team owners feel that all the questions surrounding the team are gonna be about Bonds. Even so, I would tell a reporter if I was his teamate, Any questions you wanna ask about Bonds, go ask him yourself. It's not like the guy walks around looking for the attention that he gets. But either way I don't think he's gonna get an oportunity to play another game ever again. I will be very surprised if someone signs him.

He might be able to hit .260 an thats somewhat sufficient. But he is a liability in the field. The only way that I would feel comfortable with him on my team as a GM would be as a DH. Therefore if he does come back, it should be with an AL team.

That's what I've pretty much thought, that he would be better off in the american league as a dh. I think his fielding days are over. Or maybe even a move to 1st base if he stays in the national league if possible. I always thought he would end up with the Angels. It just seems like a good fit to me. He would give Vladamir Guerrero alot of protection. Right now they have Torri Hunter but I don't really see him as a serious power threat. Bonds still drew alot of walks his last year in San Fran. And I think he hit 28 hrs. Those are good numbers. But he has been away for 2 yrs now. And teams are going to wonder if he can still have that same impact in the line up if they were to consider signing him.

I think that Barry Bonds has played his last game in baseball and will not come back. He is not getting any younger and he has to be slower than before. I still think that he has the power but what team will want to risk $5 million - $10 milllion on him? He might not even play the whole season. I heard the Tampa Bay Rays were interested last year but I am not sure if they want him now. Also, doesn't Bonds still have a trial to go to and could he face jail time?

myLot reputation of 76/100. stinge (463)   ranked 33 out of 230 in baseball  1 year ago

I think he does have an upcomming trial. I have heard of the Rays. I don't think they were that serious about it. If I'm not mistaken I thought I heard reports on espn radio over the summer last year that Tony Larussa had expressed his interest to the St. Louis Cardinals management about bringing in Bonds to give some added protection for Albert Puljos, but they rejected it. As far as his salary, I heard from his agent also on espn radio just before the new year that any contract that Bonds would sign would be at a huge discount. And I'm talking about the league minimum. At this point he just wants to play and he's not gonna get a contract offered to him in the million dollar range. Of courese he's slower. And I have thouoght from day one when his career ended in San Fran that he would be looking to go to the american league as a full time DH.

From an organizational sense, I wouldn't want to sign Barry Bonds. Although he is still a productive player, you have to look at the situation from both sides. Is his production at this point in his career worth the headaches he brings along with him? I think the negatives far outweigh the positives.
