Should your computer mouse retire at 40?  

then what should be the better alternative? of course the financial aspect is very important

He he, that sounds so funny, I don't have a mouse as I have a LapTop, but there is a main computer in the spare room whic my hubby use sometimes and its the third mouse he has had so I don't think this one is ready to ready, I just have a touch pad. Hugs.

No doubt that mouse is not going to go off the screen for a long period. At least not still the default way of using the computers change. By that I mean, today we consider computer as a machine that has a monitor that sits in front of us and their is an input device to control it. Things will change only when something like Microsoft Surface (Google to know more about it) becomes the market standard. In such an environment, we can throw away our good old mouse, but machines like MS Surface for home use is far away in the future considering its development time, cost and enough reasons to use such a machine at home.

Only other alternative to mouse seen in the future is touch screen(Like in MS Surface). But think of a fact: How many of us will love to take our hand every now and then to the nooks and corners of a monitor sitting some feets away from us? It will only add to the computer "aches" that we already have. It is not at all ergonomic for desktops but some of us may consider to use it for portable computers. More over, as you said, there is no other thing as cheap as a mouse to control that cursor on the screen.
