Actually, I think it was a good show and opened a lot of eyes. But, part of the problem was that people would watch that show and found themselves relating and condoning Archie and his views. I think that's the controversy. It was meant to make fun of people like him, but it had an opposite effect on many people.
I watched it when I got older as well as the spinoff, Archie Bunker's Place where Archie changed a lot and became a likable character afterall.

i love the show, and the reason i love it is because it dealt and discussed issues that other shows didn't talk about. people say it is racist but really not, they talked about it and archie was but the son in law and his daughter would argue the other side of it so it really gave people two points of view which is really fair
