Like may people, I am using the new year as a great time to re-look at our finances. Here are a couple of things that I have decided to focus on so that we will have a bigger saving account by the end of the year:
1. Establish an emergency savings account that is equal to 3 months of our monthly expenses. We need to have savings to cover ourselves when all of those "little" emergencies that come up. I don't sub in the summer and my hubby's hours always get cut, so we end up in a bind each year. In order to do this, we will set aside a consistent amount each paycheck.
2. Clean-up our debt. We are lucky enough not to have too much in credit card debt - we have under $3,000, but we have a lot of medical bills that we need to take care of. All US residents have the right to a free credit report each year, so I will be ordering one for my husband and I today from this free annual credit report site : www.annualcreditreport.com.
Because you are allowed one report per bureau each year, some experts advise staggering requests (ie. requesting one from TransUnion this month, one from Equifax in May, and one from TRW in September. This will allow you to order three credit reports per year, and provide you a way to monitor your credit throughout the year. We will set aside an amount to pay towards debt reduction each month - as we pay off a debt, that amount will be added to the debt reduction amount as well. If we are able to build up our 3 month reserve, that amount will also go towards debt reduction.
Do you have any New Year's Resolutions regarding your fnances?

That is definitely a major goal of mine! I am in debt, I have not qualms about admitting that! It sounds totally crazy but, getting into debt actually introduced me to the humble budget sheet so some good has come out of all of this! I don't have any form of emergency savings account although that does sound like a very good idea. I just don't have the money to put away into a savings account; I'm hoping that this will change at some point in the future. I don't have a credit card anymore, I used to and then I started relying on that tiny piece of plastic! I cut it in two and disposed of it. I may apply for another one in the future as I think that they can be quite useful when it comes to emergency situatios! Perhaps you are stuck somewhere on the other side of the world and that credit card will prove to be very useful. Anyway, this year I'm focusing on getting my finances into some kind of order. Good luck with your own finances. Andrew

I've also resolved to get a grip of my finances. I owe a lot of money in credit cards and personal loans (30,000). On the good side, I will have my house paid off within 4 years. I have stored away my cards (except 1 for emergency use only) and am buying on a cash only basis. It's amazing how much stuff you can do without when you open your pocketbook and think about spending your hard earned money on it! It will take quite a while, but I am planning on paying everything off within the next 5-10 years. Once the house is paid, I can apply a large chunk of my salary to by cards and retire debt free.

I am very excited about 2009. 2008 was just horrendous. I owe to much to pay off all my bills, but I am hoping to pay off 2, and then apply the payment that I paid those to the rest. The main goal is the emergency fund. I have a retirement account, but no real emergency fund. I started a small business late last year so my goal is to work it more. I am assessing what needs to be done to improve sales. I am sure things would be better. Happy New Year to you.

Great discussion! I always get excited about getting better with personal finances. :) I have resolved to get rid of some personal debt also. I plan to pay off my car loan this year (it will be paid off a year early) and also pay down my credit card (unfortunately I have a lot of credit card debt at about $11,000--yikes!). I also plan to increase my emergency fund to about six months worth of living expenses.
My plan will take hard work and discipline, but I've already mapped out my budget for the rest of the year. By this time next year, if all goes well I'll be in great shape financially!
